I just got my warranty replacement from ATI on a defective 9700Pro that I had been using unwittingly for the last year w/Cat 2.2 drivers. Installing new drivers a few months ago brought the problem to my attention in the form of display corruption in the Window’s desktop, menus and icons.
After over a month of searching the web for a software solution (I didn’t even consider that the card was defective, since I’d been using it for months), I’d hadn’t come up with a fix. I just chalked it up to another one of those “ATI bad driver issues” that I’d heard so much about and I bought a new card – the 9600XT. Since I had nothing better to do, and it still bugged me that I hadn’t found a definitive cause for the corruption, I contacted ATI and explained the problem to one of their reps. The ATI rep told me that the card was very likely defective and instructed me to return it for a replacement.
I shipped it back to ATI exactly a week ago (Feb 6) by FedEx 2-Day and received the replacement today by UPS Next Day Air. I can’t wait to get home and do some benchmarking on my new box with my new non-defective card.
I’m as happy as a little girl.
