View Full Version : Old Pentium 100 needs overclocking
A friend told me there used to be a software means of overclocking pentium chips. I have a P 133mhz chip running at the motherboard's maximum of 100mhz. I obviously have some room to overclock and would like to get the best I can from this NT based web server.
Does anyone have or know the name of a simple overclocking app for these old chips?
There is software such as softfsb and maybe another one or two, but they adjust within windows only what your motherboard is capable of doing.
What you need to find out is whether or not your current motherboard has jumpers to change the multiplier. Sounds like it's set at 1.5X, but you need to change it to 2X. If you don't have a manual handy, look online for instructions you can download. Good luck.
The mobo is set correctly, it's max speed for the CPU is 100mhz (3x33mhz fsb). I was told there was another tweak, a windows based app...
I just double checked. A Pentium 100 is supposed to be running default at 1.5X66 FSB for a total of 100 MHz (not 3X33). The PCI bus runs 1/2 of the FSB or 33 MHz default, maybe that's where you got confused.
If there is a 75 FSB setting, try that first. If you have a 2X multiplier jumper setting, I'd try that too if you can't increase the FSB. I doubt there is only way to change voltage (I think 2.8 is default), but if you could bump it a tiny bit, that might help too, if you have adequate cooling.
The Windows programs, like softFSB, allow you to change the FSB while the computer is running only works with motherboard's that have those settings. To my knowledge, if the motherboard does not support a FSB setting, the software doesn't work.
soft fsb won't work on a p100, you need to change the multiplyer and/or fsb, I managed recentally to get a 166mhz mmx pentium to 263mhz with a 3.5x multiplyer and a 75mhz fsb, this is a ceramic pin array chip similar in looks to the p100, not the plastic pin grid array type which I have gotten to 300mhz (a p200mmx)
Thanks, I'm gonna try to locate those jumpers (I think the data sheet I have on the motherboard may be for the incorrect model, I'm going to investigate further).
I don't recall seeing anything for multipliers (though FSB jumpers for 33 and 66 are visible), it may be because it's a ACER and they probably were not concerning with my tinkering 5 years later... but I haven't given up yet.
back then almost all motherboards had fsb and multiplyer options simply because they weren't automatically done like today.

have u tried to use CPUFSB instead......all u need to do is locate the clock generator....use the matching one in CPUFSB......i think u can get it from the ftp site.....but i forgot the link to it
this is an old p100 system I much doubt that the fsb can be changed by software, but there are almost always jumpers on the board for at least 50,60,66mhz and usually a 75mhz option as well, there will also be jumpers for multiplyer as well, I would think that yu would be able to get 120-133mhz out of that chip fairly easily with a multiplyer of 2 and an fsb of either 60 or 66mhz.
Much Gratitude.
I checked the mobo one last time, and wouldn't you know it, across from the FSB (50, 60, 66) were 6 jumpers for 2/3, 1/2, and 2/5 stepping. Tried the 1/2, didn't post. Tried the 2/5, booted at 133mhz!! Excellent job to all. Thanks.
