I've got a motherboard asus cuv 4x-e and pentium celeron 700, 128 ram at 133, hd ibm 10 gb ata 66 at 5200 rpm, matrox g400 32 mb dual head, asus 50x and cd-r mat****a 4/8, windows Me.
my system crashes and hangs at 1050 Mhz and also at 700Mhz. I've disabled the onboard PCI audio and the system work good. Have I to buy another sound card (and what) or can I use the onboard (and how)?

It seems that on board sound cards are a problem for overclocking. Many boards have noise problems through the sound port when overclocked, others quit working. A separate card is the best way to go.

Can anyone offer suggestions for an inexpensive sound card that will handle 40+mhz pci bus?

Sound Blaster Live Value is a nice bargain. Get the OEM over retail box to save a few more bucks.

I had a cheap Creative Vibra 128 PCI sound card and had endless trouble with the card when overclocking, but my guess is that the card was faulty anyway...so i had to revert to the onboard sound, utilizes the creative CT5880 chip, so far i've been lucky with my onboard sound even when overclocking my 800E to 1040mhz...but as soon as i get a little more cash, will definately go for a decent sound card.

When trying to OC cel600 on old 810 mobo, the onboard sound died at 72mhz fsb. Went out and took a chance on a cheap I/O Magic sound card. I can now run 82.4 fsb. The sound's not great but it runs at a 41.2 pci bus. Not a bad deal - an extra 100 mhz for only $20.
