View Full Version : What's the purpose of a cold plate on P4?

Can someone tell me why a cold plate is necessary if I plan on putting a pelt on top of a P4 with an IHS? Shouldn't the IHS take care of that?
If a cold plate IS necessary, where could I get one that will fit the specs of a Wite Water waterblock?

It's stil nesessary because the coldplate is alot thicker than the heatspreader.
there isn't one made for the WW, the only choice is going homemade.

Damn, I ordered the wrong waterblock.
Any recommendations on a good waterblock that will suit a 172W 24V pelt?

those pelts are usually used on gpu's, but a good pelt waterblock is the swiftech MCW500-T or whatever it's called, it's the MCW500 with teh coldplate and such.
Or the maze3-1 or Maze4-1.

Would there be a problem if I used it on my CPU?
I have a 24 V Mean Well PSU.

If he has a deticated mean well PS shouldn't he go w/ a 226W pelt? Also, the whitewater is designed to cool the die of a CPU which is small in comparison to a pelt. A switftec block would be better as stated above.

he has a 24V meanwell PSu, so it wouldn't work for a 226watt.
Honestly, a 172watt pelt is rather small for modern cpu coolig.
My geuss is that it cool similar to not having a pelt, but you could always try it out.
If the pelt is the same size or smaller than the heatspreader it might work, but you'd still have to solve the ability to get proper mounting pressure on the TEC.

You absolutely cannot run a pelt without a coldplate. Calling that piece of metal on the P4 a "heat spreader" is pure marketing. The only thing it does is protect the core.
Oh, and another thing; You will want a 1/4" thick coldplate at a minimum. A 3/8" thick plate would be optimal. Here's a link on coldplates: http://www.overclockers.com/articles305/

I guess I'll get used to regular watercooling for now, then I'll upgrade to a pelt WB after a few weeks.
