I'm pretty sure it's my v5 5500. What can I do to get more MHz out of my CPU?

Abit BE6-II / pc-133 256 mb

Thanks for helping a n00b !

Not neccessarily. What is the S-code and stepping revision? Check the stats in the CPU database on the front page. Is it an 800E or EB?

It's an SL457...cBO. I don't know what the S code is. It's listed on the Intel page as an 800...no E or EB. I think it might be a coppermine.

Any ideas?

ok... you have a BE6-2 mobo and yes.. that is P3 800E and yes it is copper. Yes it does sound quite logical number that you're topping out at 994 at the moment but you may have more headroom for further OC'ing. Is your Voodoo5 PCI or AGP version? The Voodoo is not the best in stability in overclocked systems. If it's the PCI version you might have better luck overclocking higher. Also consider this.. your CPU might be topped out at 994 on a cB0 stepping type. You are not explaining enough how you're stuck at 994mhz though. State exactly what kind of symptoms you're getting. That will help us narrow down the problem that is holding you back.

Ok...v5 5500 AGP
I'm stuck at 944...not 994. And I'm running Win98 SE.

I've noticed if I go any higher than 116 FSB, my Windows screen at startup will act funny. What happens is that the colors on the Windows flag (emblem) will dissappear, but it will load. Then when I try to run a game (ie. CS or UT) the game will lock up and I have to reboot. I have tried all sorts of MHz settings for my v5 (from 166 to 178 MHz) Nothing seemed to help. Now, if I'm running FSB@116, everything is great. If I go any higher I have probs.

I hope this helps and thanks for the input

Someone else was stuck around this level with a be6
and moved the memory to the 3rd row and got to 1008mhz.
Might be worth a try and cant hurt anything.
Goodluck.

Oops... sorry about that, Eliminator. Yeah it's at 944 lol.

Hmm... yeah try what Placid mentioned about seating your RAM in different banks. That does work good sometimes. Also, be sure you have a good HSF for your processor. And try to keep the ambient temperature within your computer case as cool as possible so the cooler air can be blown to the processor too. This could be processor and/or RAM related obviously.. Also, if you have increased the Vcore voltage, try bumping a notch and see if that will do it. good luck

I haven't seen any mention of what your voltage is set on.

Well, I moved the RAM to DIMM 3 which solved the problem of the colors on the Windows flag. Then I actually was able to boot windows @ 960 (v1.70), but I could not get into any of my games. Then I rebooted the computer @ 960 and got this error:
BIOS ROM CHECKSUM ERROR
Detecting Floppy Drive A Media...
INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

I tried setting voltages from 1.70 to 1.90 and nothing helped. I went back to 1.70 and then I was able to load Windows again, but no games. So then I tried to push the FSB to 125 just to see what would happen and the computer froze at Startup and never gave me any kind of error. I figured as much, I was just trying anything and all voltages ( I wanted to see that 1 GHz). Anyway, that's that.

Thanks for the help. You did manage to solve my Windows bootup screen issue !!!

Okay, now set it to stock speed and up the Vcore to about 1.9v and boot into the bios and check your cpu temp in the PC Health menu item, hopefully it's not too high. Now load and run Folding@Home (preferably), or Prime95 and burn the CPU in for a couple of weeks. After that, see if it will go any higher than it did previously.

I don't like the sound of "burning" anything relating to my computer, but I'm trying it. I have it at 1.9V. Temp is at 45C (case Temp 25C). I'm running Seti@home 24/7...No Temp changes as of yet. I'll probably have to post again in about 2 weeks, but I hope not.

Thanks again for all the replies !
