Ok . . . . So im on my 3rd hd this month. Here's the story of my first one. http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=269303

I couldn't resolve the problem with my western digital so I partitioned my 160gb maxtor and installed winxp on a 30gb partition. Now yesterday something happened to that drive as well. I went to add/remove programs from control panel and removed windows messenger since I had just finished downloading msn messenger. I restarted since it had prompted me to after the uninstall, after the computer had restarted it took a while loading up windows and when it finally did my screen just displayed the wallpaper for about a minute and then i recieved a message saying coudlnt not find "msmgs". I restarted, and BIOs seem to verify everything but i then got a message saying "disk read error ctrl+alt+delete to restart " I restarted 3 times and got the same message each time. I popped in my windows cd and tried to reinstall everything seemed to be going good so far, formatted the drive using NTFS created 2 partitions one 30gb and the other the remainder of the drive. It proceeded with the installation but when it got to 19% it said could not load "esentprf.ini" so I pressed esc to skip that file. It did not read any other files off the disk after that and when I tried to reinstall an additional 4 times it always froze up on the same file. I tried the cd on 2 other computers and it worked perfectly. At this point I took an old 20gb maxtor harddrive and installed windowsxp everything seems to be working so far. Whenever I try connecting the 2 drives (80gb western digital and 160gb maxtor) they are not detected in BIOS and my Primary master 20gb maxtor drive is not detected either. When the 20gb is by itself with the cd drive everything works. I really do not know what to do at this point. This is my setup:

CPU : AMD 3400+
Motherboard : MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R
RAM : Corsair value select 512x2 pc3200
PSU: Thermaltake Silent PurePower 560W
Vid Card: Nvidia Gforce4 mx 440

Let me know if I am leaving anything out. Sorry for the long messages but Im trying to provide as much detail as possible. Any help will be very much appreciated. Thanks.

did you try calling maxtor? thats really about the only thing i can think of since the bios cant even detect it, so running a diagnostic is out of the question.

Remove the drives and run a RAM test. Similar errors can easily occur due to bad RAM.

The detection issue could be due to a bad HDD, as it can affect other drives as well. Disconnect the other drives and run WD's diagnostic after running the RAM test. I'd run the Maxtor drive's diagnostics as well. Both with only the drive under test attached.

Nope the bios does not detect the drives. Just in case I ran the memtest on each module one at a time and same problem. It's def. the drives because I tried them on two other computers and they were not detected either. I tried them in all possible configurations . . . . primary master, prim slave, secondary master, secondary slave.

It's starting to sound like the mainboard interface may be damaging the drives. Have you checked the mainboard site for BIOS updates or servce notes?
