ill leave out the swearing and tell you what i got....
P3700 SL4C3 cCO
i got it to 935 with a gorb, trashed the gorb got a alpha P3125...now i can boot at 1050 (150fsb) but get a combination of 2 errors "explorer illegial opperation" or my "norton auto protect"....kicked it down to 981(140fsb) at 1.85v...it runs but once in awhile i get the explorer error or a running program goes corrupt...(sigh).......ive done a burn in with seti twice: 700 @2.0v 24hours and 935 @2.0v 12hours....both times helped me get further... i have a Asus P3V4X i know that the temp sensors are kinda crappy so ive been looking at the averages more than anything else..(981@1.85v 35cidle-48c average load) now that seems warm to me so im weary of upping the voltage any more...and i havent lapped the Alpha yet...so what should i do more burn in's? my goal is 1050..im even thinking of a peltier kit from Leufken...

and if you've read this far i hope you'll help me...sorry for the extra long thread

hummm.... you got same type of CPU as mine with same stepping. I haven't run any Burn-in because I dont really like the idea of stressing the CPU. I know that burn-in works to some people but not all. I'm starting to think burning-in is the act of looking for trouble. The CPU chip core could get electro-migration sooner.. and that will fukup the CPU. but Im not stopping you from doing anything. it's just my personal opinion.. I got mine with no burn-in and able to run 1071mhz smoothly without any lockups in windows apps. For games, 1064 was very stable and no lockups. My recommendation is to check Memory modules. Maybe your RAM is acting up or maybe not. But try using just one stick of RAM. Doing that often solves problems also. and i would concern on cooling the CPU even if the temp is low. Freeze that b!tch and you should be ok.

i suspect you will need to run at higher voltage for higher fsb. after one burn in session 133@1.95v this cpu ran these speeds and voltages:

up to
140@1.7v
147@1.8v
150@1.85 w/locks, 1.9 runs windows, 1.95 runs everything
153@1.95 stable
155@1.95 w/locks

however, my cpu is also running quite a bit cooler than yours.

ya i dont know why the CPU is so high....my Alpha has 2 delta 38cfm on it there pulling air through...my case temp stays at between19-25c depending on the room temp.. for fans ive got 3 80mm 1 in 2 out case only came with 3 but has 4 slots...also have a slot cooler under my vid... i plan on lapping the alpha this weekend...any other ideas?

I'm a firm beleiver in burning in and ive seen more people have luck with it then not, I have not even heard about people cooking there proccesor burning in but i did try burning in by letting my chip get to 50C for a while after it was already burned in and i did loose a little stability but with a little more CV i have past that spot again so no harm no foul some chips take longer to burn in then others a week or two is a good place to start more so then a couple of sessions. quality ram helps quite a bit for allot of overclocking problems sorry that i have to be general but I dont know all that your running

well the sig tells most of what im running but i will say the memory was bought at bestby...i have however run the memory at a 150sfb with a p2350@526 for 2 months, ran without a hitch, thats the reason im not leaning towards the mem as the prob, but when i get home from work tonight i was going to take 1 out and see what happens.

sometimes two sticks can be unstable, what brand is it? also do you have a good HSF on your northbridge? do you have everything in bios OK or have you tried to play with settings until you get what your after.

Don't forget that something may not be the EXACT same as the otherthing.....there is always a difference, as minute as it may be.

might just need to remove and reseat the hsf. taken care of in any case after you lap it...

forgive me but what are you refering to as "northbridge"?...took 1 stick of mem out..well the name next to the 800 number is kbyte, the chips are marked by PQI...um, generic....well right now the machine is at 1053Mhz@1.85v i can run at 1.8 but programs stop running no errors....just ran 3d2000 and 2001 scored 4450 and 3090...im on a Win2K box..my temps are now at 36cidle and 48c average load.mobo at 23c.....i live on the top floor of an apartment building so the air is now over 70f and its only 10am...so it looks like i might be ok..need new memory what brand should i get mushkin, crucial, whats the other kingston?

Northbridge chipset is the the AGP chipset usually located next to the Processor. It controls the data transfer for the AGP device (i.e. video card). Many times, this chipset becomes critical in stability due to the temperature when the system is overclocked excess of 150mhz FSB. Cooling this chipset is an idea to maintain extra stability in the AGP department. Usually the factory Greeny looking cheap ass HS is on it. IT doesn't do good job cooling it.

What i did for my northbridge was to cut down a HSF from another proccesor i got it at a pc store for 5bucks [gooddeal] I cut it down to fit used thermal compound and four drops of superglue in the corners to hold it in place cooling the northbridge is something most overclockers do allthough its not usualy the weekest link in the chain so it may not solve your problem, your temps do seem a little high for a intel chip. yes mushkin crucial are good brands i here these two more so then kingston I think crucial is a safe bet and a pretty good deal you might think of pc 150 cas 222 you might also buy some ram where you can take it back if it is not your problem as your ram may not be the weekest link at this moment

OH, thats what your refering to as northbridge, lol....it still has the stock green sink...my alpha does sit over it sucking air across it so there is air circulating around it...ive been running seti all day with no problems that can see...so i think the memory will be upgraded, and im lapping the alpha hopfully that will drop the temp a little.

Thats great your doing everything you can to get temps down about the greenie allot of then come with no thermal compound so its best to atleast apply compound but most of the part of overclocking i like is making my own things and tweaking on it if you enjoy this i would make a better HSF for your northbridge on my pc the best thing for checking stability is gaming it stresses everything a little more then seti
