View Full Version : When the new Prescott steppings come out, I'm getting rid of my 4 Northwoods.

Prescotts are INSANE SETI crunchers!

TC is averaging two WU's every 2:05 hrs @ 3.5 GHz with his Prescott @ ~ 22-25 WU's a day!

My 2.8C @ 3.8 averages two WU's every 2:30 hrs @ ~19 WU's a day.

Must be the combination of improved HT and extra cache.

Now imagine a Prescott @ 4 GHz?

I'll have one under my prommy, one under water, and two under air :)

EDIT: I forgot to mention that TC was only using single channel DDR as well!

I want to try one of the new stepping Prescotts when they come out too. Should be able to hit 4 gig with the new ones as long as you have good cooling. Probably have to get rid of this 2.8E first though.

I want a sl6z3 (Preferably the one that clocks higher). How much do you need for it?

shouldnt this be in classifieds

But I cant get into the classifieds yet :(.

I guess it's too early to let people call dibz on my CPU's. I'll let you know though when the time comes.

New steppings are looking like May fellas:

Check out the chart near the bottom. Hopefully the very small amount of time it took them to implement these changes will actually have a noticable effect (eventhough I'll be waiting for Tejas anyways.)

and getting 22-25 WU's a day does what for you?

i think its a bit funny that people care about how fast their computers pump out WU's. what diff would 50 WU's a day make? its not like results are coming anytime in your lifetime.

sorry, i know to each his/her own, but seti makes me laugh...there are more practical causes that could use your clock cycles. but hey, keep doin what it is you do. :D

It's called a hobby and competition.

I'm also getting bored of my Northwoods. I want to start overclocking new CPU's already.

I know there are other distributed computing programs that would be more useful, but SETI has the most add-ons and is more fun to work with than all the other ones.

Folding is pure boring.

i knew it! pure boredom.

nah, i didn't mean to criticize. your hobby is probably no worse than some of the mundane things i call hobbies. :D

tbh, i know not to much about seti, except that it has to with aliens, and searching space for sounds.

I tried folding for a while 1 or 2 years back when there was fierce competitions with OC.com and some other group. I decided to help out a bit, but after a few weeks I went back to SETI.

I was actually considering running one instance of each (SETI and Folding) on my P4 Rigs to make use of HT, but I'm too concerned about my stats :) I've got more than 20,000 WU's! :)

Seti isn't just about aliens by any means - it has broadened the scope into quite a few areas of astrophysics - so if you like that field of science it's no less creditable than folding.

i use seti for stability testing purposes only. i think the GUI is pretty neat too. my wife thinks im some kind of mad scientist when i have it running. LOL

Folding info, just some interesting back ground info:

Proteins are made up of molicules and groups of molicules called functional groups. The functional group interact, for different kinds of bonds and all that good stuff. These functional groups cause proteins (molicules with specific structures and funtional groups) to interact with each other bonding, folding over on each other, etc. You can image with so many different factors effecting the interactions between just two proteins, how complex it gets more proteins are added.

Proteins like enzymes are very dependant on sape for functionality like a lock and key. i.e. there are proteins that bond to DNA temporarily to start and stop translation of DNA. If there is some kind of malfunction in the protein that causes transcription of DNA and it won't release the cell keeps transcribing (copying DNA to RNA to be translated into protein) constantly. If what is being transcribed constantly is resposible for cell reproduction you now have cancer.

Now there are a lot of other applications other then cancer, that was just an example. Basically, if proteins don't fold just right they lose their functionality or the functionality changes and in some cases it doesn't make a difference and they function fine.

That is what folding is all about.

Can someone tell me about SETI. The astrophysics and applications. Kind of an easy to understand overview.

ps I am sincerely interested, not trying to convert anyone. Hell, I don't even Fold since my computer is in pieces more than its togather. I just want a better understanding of SETI and thought people might be interested in a brief overview of the applications of Folding.

i'm gonna try seti tonight. thanks for the info, i seriously thought it was strictly spacemen type of fare.

the thing i hate about folding is that the program refuses to quit. i don't mind my pc being at full load when i'm away, but when i'm on it, those clock cycles are MINE! when i quit f@h, it starts up the process again (not the gui) and i can't get it to stop loading!

the only way i could get my clock cycles back was to uninstall.

sooo....is seti as obnoxious as f@h in this regard?

Thanks for the link.

So SETI is processing radio waves. Lots and lots of them, heh.

I'm going to hav e to google search and see if they found the proof of black holes expiring that they were looking for.

Not yet - that would be front page news material in the scientific community.
