Cpu burn in means running the cpu at a higher voltage setting than default for many hours-days while using a cpu intensive program.
Seti is a program where you help the seti space program decode radio frequencys in the hope of finding et's.
There is a seti section in the forums.

I use thewin32 client (http://www.distributed.net/download/clients.html#win32) on this site to burn in applications... it's not very pretty but very effective.
Seti is evil, it's like giving an ounce of blood to the Red Cross everyday instead of a pint once a year... stay away, enjoy your PC (that YOU PAID GOOD BUCKS FOR and devote your lifeblood to) and look for aliens with a telescope or in this weeks' "The World News" like the rest of us. If they're out there, they're way too far away to be hearing radio transmissions anytime soon... ever see Contact?? Millions of light years to the next habitable system. Let's get real. We're a flea on the dog's ass in this universe...
We're already part of an enormous networked entity, I've heard it called the "Internet" or something...
Enough philosophy and empty bytes
But if you like volunteering your resources, my bedroom needs dusting... have at it!!

The burning was explained above, and don't be sorry for newbie questions, everyone's gotta learn some day, and once, all of us were newbies too!

FIRST SETI is fun the whole group of guys and gals is like a small family and its fun to race your PC against your fellow buddies I run 24\7 Seti, Why not use what youve paid for,[it doesnt do it any good to sit and gather dust] sure they have not found anything but there is a chance and its great being part of a great worldwide team Fellow seti members would go out of there way to help you with any problems you may have and if you wanted to do 1 work unit or 100 there is no pressure. The screensaver version is pretty cool and they have a command line version that runs in the background and it will not slow your PC down at all it mainly works hard when your not using your PC
Stop by and check it out need any info email me. OH the above post is the first negetive remark ive heard about seti EVIL where does he come off saying that, and to say ET is many light years away is bogus I do not know and pinky does not know the first thing about where ET may be I know people that have claimed to have seen UFO's[normal people] and with all the world wide sightings I would tend to think ET may be closer then are friend Pinky thinks but again this is a guess.
ABOUT BURNING IN its like religion to some [there hare many different ways to do it] others dont think it works but its worked for me and I would say the majority of people at this site have had succes of some sort burning in.

SETI=EVIL, hmm. ROFLMAO :-)
If some people think we are the most intelligent life forms around, witch I hope we are not, we are in a world of, well you know what.
Lets see, EVIL= cars, knifes, baseball bats, OH yah and must be us to using SETI, lol.
Use your comp for what ever you want !! Don't let anyone tell you different.
He probably would like to take our guns and our freedom away also.
FREEDOM !!!!

newbietweaker...
Saying "SETI is evil" is simply... well... rediculous... I suppose Pinky is referring to donating CPU cycles as an "evil" waste of resources... to me, equally rediculous... other comments are no even worth responding to....
I run SETi@home, but I also tend to support mankind.. and help out when I can by being of benifit to my fellow human.... OK, I am a bit of a altruist.... And yes, I do believe that we are not alone in this universe and I also belive that we will find other lifeforms within the next 25 years or so...
All that aside... I also believe in "burn-in"... it has worked over and over for me... and SETI is FANTASTIC at burn-in... and fun... I ran it concurrently with SiSoft Sandra "burn-in" to ensure 100% CPU load at all times...
Oh well... SETI is GOOD, burn-in is GOOD... but, of course, this is just my humble opinion....
Good Luck!!!

and whats up with the blood comments....pinky do you think that we're the only ones out here? I mean come on, really, were the lucky ones right? have you looked out side at all? look at the world we live in...if looking for ET is the way for us not to destroy ourselfs, so be it....maybe if yould stop and look into the sicence of what were doing and not basing you opinion on movies, you might understand more...or is science evil to? just remember where the technoligy for your computer came from

I studied meteorology in college, applied Physics, and read tons of Asimov and Hawking (that's Stephen Hawking to the layman). I say this only to say I have a base of shared knowledge I pull from.
I only went into my rant because many of the scientists see the reality of the situation -- if ET wants to talk, they'll have to be the one's intitiating the call. Listening for proof is childish, it's like waiting for a sign from God when all the evidence is all around us.
Contact was a popular reference I made the mistake of thinking would help explain my stance. I am in no way attacking SETI contributors; hey, everyone needs a hobby. Just don't make it policy.

To Pinky:
I'm a big fan of Carl Sagan and Stephen Hawkinhs books. They were a big influence in my life as they brought a hardcore knoledge (physics and astronomy) to a level that a common man may glimse a little of the truth. Carl Sagan believed that we were not alone.....he was one of the main SETi supporters over the scientific community. So, saying that SETi is a waste of time is like saying that all of the astronomical knoledge is crap.....(Hey, Mike if found an odd interstellar phenomena that is 3,000,000 light years away, check it out).
SETI is serious search for Extraterrestial Intelligence. If you can donate (remember, donation means giving away something that you don't need to some worthy cause) some CPU time, you are making a contribution to mankind.
Besides, how many hours will you be usinbg your PC? If you work with it you can use it for 10-12h/d or if you use it for gaming 6-8 h/d, so the other 10-18h you are not using it, you leave you $2,000 machine just gathering dust!!!! Donate that idle time to SETI!!!!!
As for the burning of the CPU, SETI is as good as all the other programs around the web. It make 5 TeraFLOPS (thats 1e12 or 1,000,000,000 Floting Point Operations) that can give any PC a run for its money. You can do other boring things like folding a protein, calculate prime numbers or pi (3.1415.....) This will also stess your processor, generate heat and test if your rig works OK. If you leave your PC on all night and dont crash, you have done a good tweak and use your PC with a lot of confidence. But use SETI, is more fun.
To newbieoverclocker:
We welcome you to this community. There is space for everyone. We respect any opinion, and we like to pass the knoledge of this great hobby. Feel free to ask anything (if better to ask than to fry your PC). Come and see the www.overclockers.com SETI site and forum and check all the opinions we can give you.
