View Full Version : PNY Verto Geforce FX 5600 Ultra question(s)

Just received my RMA'd card from PNY. Turned in a Ti4200 64mb card because of a heating problem on the card. In return I received a PNY Verto Geforce FX 5600 Ultra 128mb card w/ the Flip chip on it..speeds are at stock (400/800). I'm glad that I received a replacement card, but I really don't know enough about the card. I've been out of the loop for about a year on buying any computer parts. However; I did do alittle research and found a duplicate card produced by Chaintech:
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-145-049&catalog=48&manufactory=BROWSE&depa=0
The PNY FX card is identical to the FX70 card, but has the "PNY" sticker label on the cooling fan as well as the "manufactured by pny" on the back sticker.
I thought at first that I had a FX70 card made by Chaintech. I think that this is a FX70 card w/ the flip chip on it.
My question(s) is(are):
Where can I find a picture of the PNY Verto Geforce FX 5600 Ultra 128mb card?
And, could this be a "Chaintech" card repackaged for PNY?
Also, while checking the Nview, it does state that the card is a "Geforce FX 5600 Ultra." SiSoftSandra states that the chip is the NV31.1. I thought that the chip was just a NV31. Is there such a chip as NV31.1?
Any help is appreciated...
thanks

There was a second a second release of the 5600ultra.
The first 1 was clocked lower than 400/800.Maybe thats why the different chip#.
I too have the pny 5600ultra.If u have any ???'s let me know.

I had to cut off the top portion of the heatsink, right under the ridges of where Vertigo is written and between the plastic pin. I seen that my heatsink would not sit flush on either the gpu or ram sinks, so I made two pieces out of it. I also use a delta fan, and not the default one.
Mine OC's very well, while I heard other's don't. I would definitely take the heatsink off, just to see if it is making good contact to the GPU (You can tell by the spread of the thermal paste). I think mine only covered 2/3 of the GPU, if that.
There are two versions of the 5600U, flip chip (which is the newer version) and the slower running flush chip. NV31.1 could be referring to the flip chip(revision), which is a good thing.

BTW....When you say your card is identical except for the PNY logo. Does that mean you have a blue PCB board, and not the PNY purple one?

Football,
It has the blue PCB board. It is identical. I'll take a pic of it tonight after work and post a link (hope it works)
Thanks,

You will have to host the pictures (have a website), and then just link the webpage using the http:// button at the top.
So, just copy the webpage of the pic to the http://

and then hit enter
I don't know why the links don't work properly....
Here's a question Football:
On picture 24, the fan is not rotating all of the time. Is this normal for the 5600 ultra card?
Current GPU core temperature is 33 C
Ambient temperature is 25 C
Core slowdown threshold is 134 C
Thanks,
Octavious

Yep, that's it!

But the board is blue, not purple.
Strange...I wonder what PNY did?

I just can't tell what is going on by those pics, the board could be red I wouldn't know it.:D
But I can't imagine it would be normal for a one fan system on a video card to stop, that would not be normal.
Your temps however, do seem normal. 25 ambient would have my GPU idling at around 29c running at 470/900. But then again, I have modded my heatsink and i'm using a more powerful fan.
I seen blue from PNY before, so it might be normal.
I guess it wouldnt matter, as long as the card is performing as should.
You had qouted my first reply to you, did you have something to add or say?

This card pictured here is definitely blue, so either color is ok I guess.

Thanks for info football!
Sorry about the pics..new to it. Yeah, the board is blue :) . Picture 26 shows the color but abit fuzzy.
I wonder if the fan system is different on this particular card. When I started Vietcong up and running and played for about 10 minutes, I stopped the game and noticed the fan rotating...the temp was 40 C. Then the temp started to drop and now the fan is off again. I do have two 8" fans (vornados) blowing into the side of the machine.
Do you think that the fan system is design to "go on" when the temp starts to rise and then "turn off" when the temp is at a certain lower temp?

It could be, 25c ambient is very cold.:D
I have 28c right now, and my room seems as if it's freezing!
All the cards (5600Ultras) could be that way, I didn't let my stay on there long enough to find out. It would be amazing that a one fan system unit would do that, didn't think the heatsink was that great, although it is good if it makes flush contact to GPU and RAM.
Have you tried to overclock yet?

Football,
Found this at:

SIDEBAR: Like the GeForce FX 5900 Ultra, the fan on the GeForce FX 5600 Ultra operates dynamically. page 8 of 18
I wonder what they mean by dynamically?

Football,
I have not overclocked this card yet. Still trying to get some info on it and then need to ask you how to on the proper oc'ing of this card. Don't want to fry this puppy....no money for replacements.
Yep, found an interesting artical on the 5900 ultras. They seem to have a dynamic fan so that the fan will actually speed up for cooling purposes. It doesn't say anything about the fan not rotating if the temp falls to a lower temp. I suspect that this is the case.

Football,
To give you an idea of the temp in the house: 68 F
CPU temp: 87 F
MB temp: 78 F
And I'm freezing!

Having owned 2 5600 ultras, i can confirm that it is normal for the fan not to spin during 2d applications.
Once u play a game it goes on. Also on system startup.
To me, this is rediculous because at idle the card gets just as hot sometimes because of the fan not running!
I had a bfg and now i have a pny and they both do this.

I can feel the freeze from here, lol!:D
I don't think you can fry the card, gpu throttle will kick in before that. I tried on many occasions to complete 3DMARK01/03 at 500/900, it just won't happen. And if I use a speed that's not good, it will just slow the GPU down resultting in worst performance than if I had not oc.
You are learning a lot about that card, damn good researching my man! I would never had thought the fan was running based on temps.
You keep posting things you find out, it is very helpful. But clock that card at 450/850 just to see if it will perform, run 3DMARK01 and tell me your score? Some say take it slow, you can...I went streight for 460/860 and knew I had a winner right off the bat.:D

Football,
I used 3DMark03 w/ latest update. I ran the first test with stock speeds and w/ the 53.03 drivers. The second test is with stock speeds and w/ the 56.55 drivers. The third test is with stock speeds and w/ the 53.06 drivers.
Test 1 = 3383
Test 2 = 3435
Test 3 = 3414
Is this normal for this card at stock speeds or should this be higher?
