View Full Version : One-Click Update with New Core!!!!

Wedo
02-16-04, 10:35 PM
In an effort to keep our team ahead of the game, I just whipped out version 2.2 which includes the nifty new Core.

Get it here. (http://www.justa-larrkin.com/folding/OC-FAH.zip)

No longer will we fret over which version and what flags to use. This is the end all, be all, FAH One-Click Install with more Juice than Minute Maid and more Fructose than Corn Syrup.

Directions for the latest FAH One-Click.

1. Download the One-Click zip file.

2. Unzip the file to a floppy or to a directory (folder) on the desktop.

3. Edit the client.cfg with notepad and change the text "Wedo" to your folding username. Only use notepad to edit the client.cfg as WordPad, Word, or any other word processing program will mess up your config file!

4. Click the .exe file.

Poof, you're folding like a glass roofed building in Russia.

Never again will we talk of "which flags" or "what version should I use if" as now we are one with the One-Click, one with our team, and I am one with my

Ummm....will it start the work unit I am working on over again? This is completely updated, so I should install this on all of my systems? What if already installed an older version of your one click, how do I go about uninstalling it? Just delete the folder and the service?

Matt

To "upgrade" the One-Click, I would:

1. Start/Run/Services.msc and stop the F@H (or FAH) service.
2. Delete everything in you FAH directory (usually in C:/Program Files/FAH) except the client.cfg. Move that file to your desktop.
2. Download the new version and unzip but delete the client.cfg that comes with it.
3. Install the new version and move your client.cfg into the FAH directory.
4. Check to see if the service is running, you might have to restart it or reboot to get it up to speed.

Stop making new ones! ;) I still have some borgs with the old 3.25 because you kept changing the one-click to a "better more improved" one. Is this it, can I update all the borgs now? :D

nikhsub1

Stop making new ones? Heh! As stanford makes changes (AMD must use forceSSE to get sse instead of forceasm etc etc) so must the Wedo-meister. I think this latest one will be the one around for a while as all CPU's can be running SSE again without fear of the machine horking. I have 85 machines to deal with, don't tell me how much work it is changing things on all your boxen :D

Wedo
02-17-04, 10:49 AM
With this new core I *had* to make a version as borging is now that much easier. Doesn't matter if it's a P4 or an AMD anymore and concern about the occassional AMD lock up is gone.

AMD's are mucho faster with the new core and -forceSSE flag, so it had to be done.

I have only a 1/4 of what you have Nik, I can only imagine the trouble you go through keeping them all up and folding.

Is it safe to assume a Dually new cored One-Click is on the way?

Man that works great Wedo! I just used it and the service started immediately for me, no need to reboot. The config file stayed just as I edited it. If anyone has problems with this install it MUST be user error.

No it doesnt... If you delete the core, it will download the new one. However, that change took place after Wedo made this one click version, the 1.56 Core was still in beta.

Hey everyone!! Sorry about the abscence:(

Life has just been that busy of late. Unfortunately, it looks like a lost a portion of my borg. Doesn't sound like I'm gonna get those back either. Guess I'll have to start really looking for new borg....

In the meantime can someone bring me up to date? What's this I hear about no more SSE problems?

With the new 1.56 core for Gromacs there are no more issues with AMD crashing while running SSE! See this thread: http://www.ocforums.com/vb/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=270233

Well, it's about time!

Nik, I have another question.

1). I now have a few P4's that support hyperthreading. They all run win 2k pro. Will enabling HT and setting up 2 instances increase their production?

HT and 2K work, but not very well... That is the only problem. But, try it out and see. On all my HT machines (except my laptop) I run 2 instances and get about a 15 - 20% gain in PPW over running 1 instance.

Can you make like a one-click2.

So that it basically does everything the current one does but everything is 2, like the name of the service instead of

FAH

it would be

FAH2

and the folder would be

C:\Program Files\FAH2

This would help those that want to run 2 instances easy :D

oh i want to report this beta core is unstable on my 1800+ pally runnning at stock.

I used ASM on-click b4 and it never crashes but this new core has crashed my computer 4 times already. Weird :/

PCGUY112887

It's not a beta anymore it is an official new core. If you try the beta core download link (for just the core) nothing will come up, but if you cut off the file name off the URL it tells you that.

If it is not crashing when you do not use -forceSSE then it is most likely a folding issue.

Actually, now with the new core, it least likely a folding issue. If his computer was running no flags or the -forceasm flag and ran fine, and immediately after install of the new core running the -forceSSE flag, then it's a stability issue.

Gromacs proteins, which are faster to fold (more points) are what you request by using the -forceSSE flag. These babies will bring out stability issues in your rig that even Prime95 will not.

If you are crashing with Gromacs, back off the overclock a few Mhz and it should clear up. Also, check your temps, memory, and HD's for errors and temps as well.

I feel your pain. You need to run EMIII to view how your folding is going. It will give you all the info you need for each client you have running on your network while still enabling your rigs to run the much faster console client.

You can get EMIII here. (http://home.comcast.net/~wxdude1/emsite/download.html)

For the record the easiest way to upgrade without losing a WU is to do the following.

Win2K:
1). Make sure your logged in as admin or equivilent.
2). Go to Progams|Administrative Tools|Services - right click and choose stop.
3). Install the new and improved 1 click.
4). Reboot

WinXP:
1). Make sure your logged in as admin or equivilent.
2). Right click on the start bar and choose Task Manager.
3). On the Processes tab, chose FAH3console and end process. Choose the Fahcore_## and end process.
4). Install new and improved 1 click
5). Reboot.

Now, Wedo any way we can get a "upgrade" version? So those people that are not very computer literate can simply 1 click to change over? It would help alot with the borged machines.

So I updated to the new one-click and installed EMIII. Based on the task manager, it worked because F@H is at 100%. I have EMIII on and created box1 and have its path as C:\Program Files\Folding@Home because that's where I have the old config file and the new exe file. After I save and exit, the main window to EMIII is still blank? Any suggestions?

btw, this is my first time using the One-click update because I always had the graphical client. This is also my first time using EMIII

The easiest way to set up EMIII is to go and grab the FAH4console.exe and drop it into the path line...

ah I see, I was looking at the wrong FAH folder in my program files. I have a Folding@Home and a FAH.

OK, things are working good now :)

jlin453
02-25-04, 12:32 AM
Ok I have a new question about this. When I reboot my computer, the EMIII window is blank but still has the info like which protein it's on, etc but doesn't have how much its completed. That only shows up when I click the FAH4Console.

Also, I've done this a couple of times and each time my 'time remaining' was different and started over. Any ideas?

And whenever one frame is done at 100%, it just stays there and doesn't move on to the next frame :(

epauls
02-25-04, 12:38 AM
That is because you didn't uninstall the previous version. Just Delete and re-add the box looking at the FAH4Console file.

jlin453
02-25-04, 12:48 AM
Alright thanks, I deleted the old folder. Everything's going smoothly again. Sorry to crap in this thread :(

On a side note. Just to see what happens I simply installed the new one click on a machine that was running the old oneclick. Rebooted. Seems to be running fine and switched over.

So, it appears you don't even have to stop the old service or uninstall it. Just install the new and reboot.

can anyone tell me if i'll have any hicups doing this one on dailup.. will it hold the info.. as far as running as a service i can tell if it's working on something just by opening task manager..

will it just hold until i connect to the internet just like the graphical client?

why cant i stop the folding? i have em3 and using win2k using the taskmanager i cant stop the folding when i want to play games...

jlin453
04-19-04, 12:12 AM
You don't have to stop it when you play, the way the priority works is it only folds using left over cycles. If you're playing games it'll stop on its own. (Sorry I can't explain it in more technical terms)

And if you really want to stop it, start menu -> run -> "services.msc" . Find FAH and you can pause, stop, etc.

intense games will be hindered though especially games that are graphics intensive and have certain spiking places, FAH will use the idling cycles and it won't know to stop for the instant spikes

...

Windows does the processor timeslice allocation, not FAH. Windows should stop running FAH code when it gets a plug of stuff from a game. The game will almost certainly not be affected.

now i have to ask since its running as a serivice and its the only one installed. Em3 does not show how long its takes or what frame has been completed. am i doing something wrong? i have added the box. the only way em3 updates is if i stop the service and then restart it by going and clicking on it.... also i have just the text client installed on another computer and was wondering what i would have to do to get the 78core instead of the 65. i have done a search and the only way it seems to work is to use the one-click but i would like to know how do it manually.

thanks in advance.

Is it just me or is the link for getting the new one click not working right? I've tried to download it about ten times and each time it downloads an empty zip file. Yeah! Here you guys go! In the meantime you can use/test out my One-Click ;) Pleeaase? It is better hidden, and it doesn't use the -advmethods flag [tho you can change this easily] BTW It's only for WinXP right now ;)

I wasn't complaining, it's just that why did you make it when we already had 2 or 3 others?

a12bc3
04-22-04, 06:38 PM
Because ppl wanted it to be installed in the Windows/FAH directory instead of the Program Files/FAH directory ;). I also made it for another FAH team, but I thought that you guys might want to check it out. I also took off the -advmethods flag by popular demand, and you can *guaranteedly* continue your current work, along with NOT having to restart your computer, but just running the link in the programs>>startup folder ;).
