View Full Version : Downloads in IE and Netscape do not work
I'm not sure if this is the right thread for this, but its not a problem with my network or internet connection so its the first I thought of. Anyways, on one of our PC's, whenever a download is started in IE it just sits there, never begining the download, or brings up a "Cannot find file on source site" error box, and in Netscape it will simply just not do anything once the location for the download is chosen. I checked the security settings, they are all fine, every other pc on our network is able to download just fine, except for that one. Any idea's what could be causing it to do that? The PC is Running XP Home with IE 6 and Netscape 7.1, it won't download in either one. But site viewing works fine in both except for some reason flash stopped working in IE, but works in Netscape, another problem I can't figure out. None of our other 8 pc's do anything like this, so I have no idea whats wrong with the thing. Anyone know of any solutions to getting the downloading or flash to start working again?

Is it like that for all downloads, or a specific site/file?
It does this for any download, from any site I try.

It is possible that this is an issue with a firewall! Are you running any firewalls?

Stud, you just stole the words out of my mouth! :) Firewall could be the problem, but why would he have a different firewall on this computer, compared to the others? either way, I'd still like to know

Good question! We will have to wait on his response to find out the answer....kind of like TV when they say "To Be Continued"....oh the agony LOL
The PC does have Norton Anti-Virus on it....I believe the firewall is disabled though, as is auto-protect. I will check/mess around with it tomorrow to see if Norton is causing a problem with it...never thought about that! Thanks for the ideas!

Norton is notorious for causing computer troubles.
UNinstall or disable it and see if the problem persists. I was running Norton for a bit, but it kept disabling my interent access for soemreason. I know that your problem is a little different, but let us know what happens :)
by the way, if you don't have a firewall, you should get one. I use Sygate (and it's free)
With Norton completely disabled, (it doesn't even have a firewall in the version on the pc) it makes no change. IE hangs at the download window, looking for the location to download from, and Netscape does not bring up the download manager or a progress window when a download is started. I don't use a firewall on my pc's since I am behind a router. (linksys) I have no clue what is causing it to not download, there is nothing else on the PC that could be causing it. Then there's also the problem where IE no longer plays flash media, no idea why it does that either, a reinstall of flash player made no difference, and it works fine in Netscape. Any other ideas?

It sounds to me liek you will have to make the change and switch to Mozilla firefox....You will be happier with it anyhow!

just trying to fiure it out. I did a quick search of google using "IE6 download problems" and it seems to be a connon problem with interent explorer. In most cases they recommend upgrading to the latest version of IE6
Otherwise, spyware and viruses seem to be factors.

On second thought, I'd get a copy of Mozilla (or firefox if you dont need the email apps) and uninstall all other browsers. Then install Firefox. It could be a conflict problem with Netscape and IE6:
