View Full Version : Overclocking my 733MHz p3
useless

hey there..
after reading a few articles about overclocking
(including some from this site) i've decided to start overclocking my computer.
so i've started to increase bus speed from 133 slowly.. checked the stability in 3D games such as Quake III and such.. everything worked fine till I upgraded to 148MHz.. then everything started to crash (BSOD, Freeze, etc)
should I get the speed back to 146MHz? or increase the voltage a bit?
I want to add that I did NOT buy another fan..
will it increase the temperature?
the last thing is, as i said right now my computer is overclocked to 800MHz only, temperatures are: CPU: 40c MB(ASUS CUV4X): 35
these temperatures are ok? or I should add more fans and stuff?
waiting for a fast response.
-useless.
It could be your memory. Did you back the timing down to 3-3-3?
Also it would help to know what motherboard and memory you are using.
Your temps are high for a p3 probably not bad for using stock heatsink and fan.
You can bump the voltage up a step at a time to see if it will help the overclock.
I personally would not go more than 1.9v.
Just keep an eye on the temps if they get to 50c under load then I would wait until I got a better cpu cooler.
The cpu wont burn up until 65-70c so no need to worry about 50c but to stay safe I wouldnt go higher.
You probaly wont get the max overclock out of the cpu anyway until you can keep the temps close to 30c.

Hey again,
first i'd like to thank you for the fast reply ;-)
second,
I have an ASUS CUV4X motherboard and 256 133MHz memory
(i'm not sure which company, i've been told it's Kingstone but in SiSoft Sandra they say it's somthing else: Xerox 256MB 16x(16Mx8) SDram PC133-U 333-542 (CL3 up to 133MHz)
;-)
Sounds like the memory would most likley be the holdup on a higher fsb.
If its rated 133mhz 3-3-3 then 148mhz is probably too much for it.

what is that 3-3-3 you're talking about?

one more thing, what do you advise me to do?
buy a cooling fan and increase bus and voltage?
or just leave it as 146MHz without a fan :)
btw,
some store in Israel offered me a FOP38/BALLBERING fan..
should I buy?
Its how fast your memory is being cycled.
2-2-2 is the fastest 3-3-3 is slower.
Your mobo probably only lets you choose those 2 in the bios.
Better memory will be rated 2-2-2 at 133mhz.
Also you should try to find out what stepping or version your cpu is. This will give an indicator of what you can expext from your cpu.
If you have the box look here:
http://support.intel.com/support/processors/sspec/p3p.htm
And match up the letters with those on the box. If you dont have the box they are also on the cpu casing but you will have to remove the heatsink to see them on a fg-pga cpu.

If you dont want to spend money on new memory
then just leave it at 146mhz.
I am not familar right off hand with the FOP38.
I think you could find it in the mainpage of the site thou.
Its most likley better than the stock one.
If you plan on running everyday with 146mhz then I would say a new heatsink/fan would be a good investment.
You can then try upping the voltage and see if you can get more but I really think its your memory.
With such a small multiplier of 5.5 you are not really going to gain alot of mhz.
Even if you spent money on better memory so you can run at 160mhz your cpu will only be at 880mhz. It may sound like alot more but in real use you would hardly notice any difference.

How do you know my memory is 3-3-3 and not 2-2-2 for example?
now about the processor,
i did not save the box but i saved a little part from it with lots of serial numbers and info i do not understand, i will copy them here and tell me if they mean anything ;-)

Oh yeah, remember that site you gave me?
I think I found my processor, which is:
733 SL45Z/SL3XY SL3XY cB0 0683 256K 80 19.1 2,3,5,7
(taken from the site)
it matches my PROC Code(BX...blabla.. SL45Z)
SL45Z is a cB0 cpu wich will max out around 1050mhz. Unfortunatly with the 133mhz cpu your fsb will not be able to push the cpu that high as it would take a 190mhz fsb.
SiSoft Sandra reports your memory is CL3 up to 133mhz.
Thats what I am going by and SiSoft Sandra is pretty reliable.
