How many models of Seagate 200GB 7200Rpm 8mb cache drives are there? Im thinking of getting one (very tired of WD whirring noises) and want to be sure that it is the one people say is very quiet and decently fast, and is the one im seeing reviews on. Store says it is Mfg Part #: 9W2864-555. Thx guys, gotta get it soon before rebates expire!!
And as usual, any pros/cons on this drive are appreciated.

Just a recommendation...but Samsung makes good drives too. SV4002H is my 40GB HD model, and it is absolutely noiseless! It doesn't make any noises at all...quite impressive. Might want to look at those as well.

The newer Seagates (7200.7) are fairly quiet. Not as quiet as the older barracudas (Barracuda IV), but they are a bit faster than the previous generation.
I have an older 40 GB Barracuda IV, and though it's mounted externally, I still can't hear it. The newer 80 and 120 GB drives are a bit louder, but they make very little noise. Compared to them my mint Maxtor DM9+ drives sound like a railway engine - and those have acoustic management enabled.

I'm confused. Either I have an extremely(!) quiet hard drive, or I'm not sure what. I can't hear it ever, even with accessing it very hard.
Then again..it's very possible my poorly insulated case and loud power supply is overtaking the noise.

I have a new 200GB 7200.7 HD. I'm satisified with it. Except my first drive had to be RMA'd, seems it came with bad sectors, but I jsut got a new one, and it's been fine so far....

I have two Seagates outside the case - one is the older Barracuda IV with the seashield, and the other the 80GB 7200.7 drive which comes with the exposed bottom cover.
At times I have the drives a few inches from my ears - when switching them on, and the PC much further away. The 7200.7 makes a quiet rattle (Golden ears!) while being turned on. It is mostly quiet after that but one can still hear it spinning. The older drive emits a very quiet sigh when being turned on, and is completely inaudible after that.
Compared to both of these though, my Maxtor SATA drives are like a rock concert.

Of course...maybe I've just gotten used to the noises my PC makes...that's probably it!
After all...I get very depresses and lonely when I don't hear the humming of my power supply fan :)
I have two Seagate Barracuda 40GB HDDs, although I can never hear them.

Do you happen to have it in your bedroom? I personally have 27" TV...nice shelf system(240watts), DVD, digital cable, gaming systems, etc, all on an entertainment stand. Then, I have my PC desk as well in my bedroom. And of course a bed.
And let me tell you...when I turn my PC off for the night(either to watch TV or else), I can't believe how scary quiet it is!!

You should really qualify how old your hard drive is in addition to the make and model. Many brands start out quiet then eventually get unbearable. Perfect example is the WD's, that start out silent then the whine kicks in after a few months. I have a 2 yr. old Barracuda IV that is still virtually silent. My Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 is about 4 months old. If I hold my ear next to it, I can hear a little ticking sound while searching but is unnoticeable besides that. It is faster than the Seagate.
If noise is a reason your changing hard drives, Seagate is a safe choice.
