View Full Version : Screwed up my Cel 600..can it be fixed?
I wasn't happy with 31C idle and 44C load temps @ 108 FSB. Took off and re-lapped my HS.Reinstalled with ASII. Temps were higher. Repeated, but this time I decided to lap the core or "slug". I thought I was being just so cute. Gonna come here and brag that I'm gettin 28C idle and 38C Full load.NOT!
Right now I am Folding in the background and the temp is 60C. and thats at factory spec FSB and VCore ,YIKES!!
I must have left a hollow in the middle of the core or something. This ain't good folks. Any suggestions ? Try again I guess. I sure don't want to expose the actual core. All the blue anondizing is gone. OH MY!

first you relapped your HSF....by how much? it is possiable to be to smooth...what grits did you use? when i lapper my HSF i didnt go over 1500...the main idea of lapping is to get everything flat and even not mirror finished
second you think you pitted your die...
try this clean the die, find a flat, thin hard object, 3inch by 3inch would be good...wrap some sand paper around it, make sure its tight and do 1 or 2 FLAT EVEN passes over your die you should be able to see the dust marks, if there is any spots not hit its not flat.....if its not try sanding down the edges till there even with the lowest spot do go any further....its not dead yet cause its running but you must be VERY careful from here on..
Back in the hunt!! Load temp 39C at factory FSB and VCore.
Thanks acaridans, heh Guess I was a little hysterical when I made that post. I didn't even wait for replys before I ganked it out and did a similar process to what you described. I lapped the core again VERY lightly making sure I turned it after each lapping revolution so that if I was favoring one side it would even out. I also turned the clip around on the heatsink just for grins. It is easier to install/remove noe that I have the "swinging?" part towards the DIMM slot and away from the capacitors. I just have to remove the memory first, but there is less chance of damaging the board this way.
I'll post more after upping the FSB and VCore.

Whew...you're scarin' me, there, Slake. When I saw the Subject, I thought the worst (cracked die, pins bent, etc...), good to hear it wasn't a permanant situation.
Keep us updated on it's condition....
Mr B
Didn't mean to scare you Mr B. The patient is doing fine now, running at 100Mhz FSB w/ 2.0VCore. 43C Full load and 31C Idle temps. Net gain for a night of terror is 1 degree coller at both ends. At one point the temp maxed at 85C!! Talk about a heart in throat moment... I was plenty scared. I left for a few hours with Folding running and the temp was steady at 39C @ 66MHz FSB and 1.7 VCore. That 1 degree of improved cooling cost me 78 brown hairs turned gray, 63 gray hairs turned white, and 28 white hairs left town.
Usually when you see the word "fixed", it infers something is broken, ie. inoperative, snuffed it, off the twig, run down the curtain, and joined the bleedin' Choir Invisible.
Sorry...sorry bout that...bit of the old Monty Python snuck in there...sorry.
YIKES! Um..suffice to say, I think it's "burned-in" now..... I saw the word "fixed", and man, my heart sank. Whew...all that for a 1oC drop in temps.
BTW..what gives with the "All Over" line in the avatar??
Mr B
That would turn anyone's hair white.

LOL Mr B! I was a tad exited and bewildered when I typed topic heading. After several attempts to get halfway decent temps, I thought I may have damaged the core somehow or hopelessly pitted the surface.
Oh , avatar!! , that's the word I've been searching for to describe a forum pic. The All Over is a take-off of Intel's "Intel Inside!!!" slogan.
Overclockers.com is not just Inside, It's "All Over!!!" . It also can mean that ALL of the components and the case is OVERclocked.
Yeah, that was a lot of work and tension for 1 measley degree improvement. The motivation for pulling the HSF and re-lapping was an article earlier this month based on the theory that a Heatsink would perform better if lapped with no finer than 600 or 800 grit paper. My experience tends to disprove that theory. Here's the link to the thread discussing the article which contains a link to the article itself. http://forums.overclockers.ws/forums/UltraBoard.cgi?action=Read&BID=5&TID=12089&P=1&SID=1229#ID10
Oh, and I'm back to 108FSB at 44C Full Load 2.0VCore. Gonna try to reduce that core voltage. Idle is 31C.

Hey now hold it right there....a 1c improvement is still a 1c improvement...isnt that what drives us to rip our stuff apart in the first place....any way gald your up and running again, but i bet you wont try doing that again anytime soon.....
As Ed McMahon said "You are correct, Sir!" 1 degree loss is great!.

Buy a Thunderbird - that should solve all Celeron owners problems.
