I want to make a small 30 second GIF clip from a 30 minute Avi that i have. i have no idea how to do this, so i have come to this website for advice, as recommended by a friend. sorry if it is the wrong section.

I would suggest trying Ulead Gif Animator. I remember converting Gifs to Avis using this program, and I am quite certain it does the reverse as well. It has a 30 day free trial run as well.

You can try VirtualDub (www.virtualdub.org). Select the 30 second clip you want, select File > Save Image Sequence, then use your favorite GIF animating program to convert the images to GIFs.

Do what Mr. Radar suggested and then use Animation Shop 3 from jasc to convert the images. Shouldn't take too long on your machine. I once converted 200+ 1600x1200 screenshots to a gif and it took like 5 minutes for the PC to resize/crop them though. Or you can us BSplayer to capture image frames (not recommended for many frames)
