I have decided to stop folding, and before you guys get all ****ed off, let me explain. I had been questioning why I fold for a while, but what made me finally pull the plug was my father’s last rant about the power bill. I just thought to my self “Why do I do this? It makes my room much hotter, it makes it hard to sleep at night, and it ****es my dad off. I know that folding is good for a cure and everything…. Hell, my grandma just died of cancer so don’t think I am a cold hearted ******* or anything. So I have to stop the addiction and cut the switch on my folding rigs. Hey, if nothing else at least I’ll make some money off these things in the classies…
I’m pretty sure I’ve made up my mind and I think it’s gonna take some rock hard reasons to keep me folding, so let’s hear them.

Look if you can't afford to fold, helk, I understand, fine. Some of the other reasons you gave make you sound cold-hearted, exactly what you said you weren't. Your room is hot, big deal, people are dying everyday and maybe they wouldn't if people didn't have that kind of attitude. Many people say, "Oh, who cares diseases don't affect me". You didn't say that because it does affect you and your family, which makes even harder to beleive you just would stop like this. Whatever, I am not going to flame you or anything, its your decision and if you really can't fold because of the money and your parents, I understand, but if you are just being lazy then thats not right at all. The least you could do is keep folding on systems you have in your house anyways. Good luck with everything and I hope someday you decide to join us once again.

Wow  exactly the criticism I was looking for. I'm not broke, so the bill isn't an issue, just bugs my dad :D . I was talking to someone yesterday and they brought up the fact that "What would happen if the did find a cure for cancer? The population is growing to fast as it is"

I decided I'd leave my 1.8Ghz HP folding becuase it's always on anyway.... But I need some more "Opinions" to turn back on my 3 other rigs.

Glad I could provide some guidance for you. I just didn't want to be too hard on you or anything, I spoke my mind politely, not scream at you because of the terrible bad mood I am in. Frankly, I will never stop folding ever. Cancer and other diseases directly affect my life very often recently, unfortunately. My cousin died last year of leukemia at age 15, another cousin of mine has terminal cancer (age 4) and now my uncle has a brain tumor. These are just recent things in the past 10 monthes or so. That is why I fold and will never ever stop.

You just use the same username for folding that others are using so all your points go under one name.

Why? Then I get no credit right? And no I'm not that shallow, I would just like a little credit since I'm sure my 4 pcs wouldnt make much of a dent in that for those we lost name

Just put in the username For_Those_We_Lost . Still team 32 of course. I don't care about credit that much. Our little group is just a few people that decided we should dedicate our points and wu's to those who lost their lives. A bunch of people chose to support me last year when I was going through a hard time, some temporarily, some permanently, so we created a nice subteam. Your 4 pc's would make a dent. We would be glad to have you, but its not about what rank you are, its about competing with others to better yourself, not to win anything, its all about the team comrodory and helping out those in need by trying to find a cure.

So you completely back or just a few rigs? Anyways, I am glad that you are back or semi-back. Thanks, I really appreciate it.
Matt
just to relate, I recently went through what your goin through, I got consolidated my rigs, turned off a 1 ghz amd, an amd xp 1600 'n my 1700 dlt3c that was oc'ed like a mother, reason you may ask? to much stuff running, not efficent enough, I'd rather run my 2 p4's that are over 3 ghz 'n get the same points in. you might want to consider that, consolidate, same contribution, less power, less space, more usable ^_~

Back completely I guess, but I'm looking at what MLMIB said and it makes sense... I think I'll borg my best friends 2.4 and turn off my 1600+ :D

I think a lot of us go through a "Why do we do it?" phase. I know I have a few times. When I begin to think about stoping I remember why I fold. I remember that I have Cystic Fibrosis. I rememer there are other people in my position, and worse positions. I wonder what else my 24/7 computers could be doing, nothing. I do get tired of trying to find more computers, becasue I am teh suck at convincing, but that is no reason to stop.

Guess I never had that yet. I learned about folding and ive never looked back since. Personally I think it is great cause and i f my dad made me pay the power bill to continue folding I still would. As far as the "there are too many people now anyways" ... so why not let some die..thats complete and total bs, and frankly a pretty rotten thing to say.

Just to clarify, I was not the one who thought that...

I bet you have but if not, you could set it to turn off hard disks, and other things after X many hours. That might help you with the power bill. And ya monitor off, speakers, etc.
If you have to quit we understand, I am going to be able to borg some machines soon so I can cover for ya ;)

my grandmother was just diagnosed with breast cancer, so I will never stop folding. Letting people die, what if it was your loved one that died, would you feel the same way about it then? (this isnt direct at you Electro X this is directed at everyone)

For folding, you don't want it to spin down the drives because they constantly would have to spin back up to write data.

I am wondering if it keeps it in cache or something when it sees the hard disk isn't spinning because mine spin down after 30min of no use, and when I go to bed and I don't fall asleep right away I hear them turn off, and the next day when I go to my computer I hear them spin back up.
specs? maybe ur comp dosn't have to that often(does when it finishes a frame)...
whatever you do don't join ftwl!!!! we're just gearing up to pass them :o :p
j/k join if you want. just more of an obstacle for me and osumaxx to overcome :D

P-4 2.0ghz
768 PC133 (ya I suck mobo doesn't support DDR)
em I don't think anything elce really matters to this...
It may just shut off, but then mine might pop on for a few min after I go to sleep, then go back off, etc. and I would never know. And my hard drives are still spinnin well so I don't think start/stop/start/stop hurts them.
Humm, I need to start putting my comp stats in my sig.

Do what I did. Make yourself fold by giving your computer a reason other than folding to be on. Also, do everything you can to make those excuses go away:
I upgraded to watercooling not because I wanted to see my pally 2000+ (lol) overclock more, but because the noise was driving me nuts. Now I have a PSU and a 120MM (low pitched good noise) humming me to sleep. Now I can run it 24x7 and be able to sleep and not have to worry about temps!
Then I installed a server and offered as many people free hosting as I felt my system could handle without creating too much lag during gaming. Now I can run it 24x7 with more than just the reason of folding!
Then I ran into the problem with power. Well- being both a computer nerd and a couch potato, I decided it would be best to go out and spend $50 on a tv tuner for my computer. Now I don't use my TV, which is what I would be watching had my computer been off. So now my tv tuner is taking up a fraction of the power that my actual TV was taking up. That fixed the power bill problem (kinda).
Heat: Plug/close your heat vent if you feel its a little too stuffy in your room at night. You can also open a window ;).
I gave up on folding too, a little while back- for all those excuses. Now my only excuse is lag during games (happens sometimes but isn't that severe). But I've learned to live with it.
If you do give up on folding, try this as a solution: borg 2x what you leave off. Then you can stop folding with the satisfaction that you really never did ;)

I went through the same thing. My comp wouldn't finish wu. But now it is working. As for the power. Here is what i would do. A cpu uses up about 80w. Which is a bit more than i light bulb. So what would i do if that ever happend to me. Well i would buy so low enery light bulbs. Having 5 of them wouls save me enough power to run a rig 24/7 assuming that the lightbulb would be on for most of the day. We can not make you fold and you are they one that is going have have to make the decison. All i can say is that by folding you might save a life, by doing nouthing you might become a victim yourself. Sorry if the phrase does not make sense i adapted it from a translation.

If the heat/noise/power is still an issue, you could donate the extra comps to the team, and let some one else care for them and feed them electrons. Several teams have "adopt a comp" projects.

Yeah... But I think I'd have a problem "Donating" like 2 grand worth of hardware ;)

Glad to have you back. :) Put that Celeron CPU I sent you to good use. ;) Just so you know I share the heat thing to. I just open up the window when it gets to hot. Usually I sleep with the window open lol. In the winter I stay nice and cozy though.

You can have the drives turn off at the least amount of time allowable. About 1 min. Just set folding to save every half hour up from 3 minutes.
