whats a good temp for a PIII 700 running at 933? ive heard they run at 40C at boot but this seems a bit high, can someone clue me in, all relevent data pretaining to this would be appreated

Im running at 35c full load with a p3 1ghz at 145mhz 1.8v room temp 70f.
There are alot of variables that will make the temps
more or less with the same cpu and heatsink but 40c is not too hot like you will burn up the cpu or anything. If you hit 60c then its time to start to worry.
Cpus are all different like people, some will run fine overclocked at higher temps than another of the same type.

Like Placid said.....a lot depends on the enviroment the system is in. My room temp is about 70f and the loaded temp value is 36c for me. The cpu is @default voltage too. A good, properly install HSF will keep you p3 cool enough.

ok my room is 70-75f and im thinking of getting a PIII and im worried about heat build up so when my sensors pick it up, i wont be worried if it reads like 30C because right now my board and CPU are 22C pretty much all the time

I personly would not run a overclocked intel at 40C, below that i have no problem. remember overclocked systems can get tempermental when it comes to running stable with high temps.

The cooler the better is generally a good rule, but...

I have several overclock builds, including my own (see specs below), that frequently run in excessive of 40C (the P3 700 at 933 I OC'ed idles at 40C!!) and they all run very stable (the 933 OC runs with no blue screens at all).

I think of 50C as the magical "Uh-Oh" number, it's hard to cool some processors to below 40C under load. That's like saying everyone who loses his temper should be shot. There would be no one left. Just because a CPU runs a little hot doesn't render it worhtless or unstable.

I totaly agree with what Pinky said, I have a PIII700@1053 it idles at 32c and full load is 43c, and it completly rock stable. ive even ran 3D2001 for a full day to test it, the box never skiped a beet.

You guys are probably a rule to the exception, most senior members will tell you the same thing as i have said. i was trying to be general and we all know that chips run differently from one another and i do believe that more chips will get flakey over 40C then you will find ones that run stable, as a rule i personly would not run at 40C or higher and I try my best to stay under 35C and even though I am at 32C under fuill load running Seti 24\7 i'm still looking into better cooling. You have to remember most of are MB temp readings are inaccurate and generaly tell you that you are cooler then you actualy are, if you want to get within 1 or 2C [general again] make sure your thermister under your CPU is touching the CPU and also use thermal paste on the thermister where it touches the CPU. Some even run with some kind of foam rubber or padding under the thermister so that the air around the thermistor does not affect the temp readings, If anyone knows what material i'm talking about is please let me know you can post hear but email me as well. thank you

PIII 1gig @ 1088 currently & stable, will push for more once it is burnt in a bit, Idle temps @ 25 to 26c & ambient @ 21c..under load 38 to 40 c after running SETI all night, personnaly as previously stated in the other posts, would prefer to run under 40c at full load though.

I have a PIII 700e also... It will run stable at 933 with temps not over 38*C under full load (thats with only 1 small case fan on). I myself get a bit worried when it goes over 40, but have learned that it will still perform about the same (no crashes) at that temp. Mine has been all the way up to 46*C, but that was when it was up to 980mhz (140*7) with only 1 small case fan on and under full load.

I found out that by having enough good air flow through the case, you can get significatly lower temps. With all 3 of my case fans on (2-120s and 1-80), I have never been over 40-42*C, even running full load at 980mhz.

Well since I took my peltier off, my temps are:

Ambient - 32c
cpu idle - 27c
cpu load - 32c

Of course this is with my computer desk door closed and my radiator and pump mounted underneath my computer desk. Thats why my cpu idle temps are lower then my ambient case temps. Once I get around to mounting everything in the case (whenever that will be), my cpu temps will go up a bit.
