Well, i guess i've gone and done it.....PIII 800E @ 900 is 'STONE DEAD'...dunno what happened, on Saterday everything was going fine...Sunday morning switched on the power....nothing, the screen wouldn't even come on..I thought that maybe the PSU was faulty, { 300w Seventeam } got a spare brand new 250w psu, connected it up, same thing..Took a 550E coppermine and put it into the machine, no problems machine boots everything is fine....O.K. so that means the 800E has seen better days, the question is why ? Max volts this thing was running at was 1.75v have pushed it to 1120 but was'nt stable in games, max temps under load about 38 c. So what went wrong ?
The chip showed no signs of overheating or anything of the sorts....Any ideas guys as to what may have been the cause.....i had this chip approx 8 months, sometimes whilest in windows, screen would go black with green lines across the top of the screen....strange....couild it just be that the chip was a poor one ?

very well could have been a bad chip to begin with, sorry about your bad luck. If you never got it hot and your CV was under 2.00 I dont see how you could have killed it.

Thanks for the reply Outhouse, my only guess is that it was more than likely a bad chip, i did periodically encounter lock up's etc even when not overclocked, so my guess is you're right, was a bad chip .....

If your cpu is a retail, you might be able to rma it if you did not void the warantee.
Just write to intel, and explain what happened, and see if they will send you another...but do it soon, as they are no longer making 800's and below, and are selling out their inventory ( for that reason alone might be in your favor, as they might need room for newer designs)
The only reason I could think of is maybe you got a surge....or the proc was bogas to begin with

Hi Madclocker, i suppose a spike could have been possible, caused by some sort voltage surge...who knows...? I bought the proc from a distributer
{ Mustek } here in South Africa, chances are they'll replace it by tomorrow... i had a faulty 500 Katmai once which they replaced so i don't think i'll have a problem....you mentoned that Intel have stopped production on the 800's...interesting ! If Mustek don't have stock on the 800's maybe i can pay in a little and get a 1gig, we'll see.
thanks for the reply

O.K. I my proc was replaced, but what i did, was pay in the difference and got me a 1gig @ 133fsb. Anyhow, installed the chip and went straight to 145fsb, put my proc @ 1088 +/-....i have run SETI all night at this setting, run 3Dmark2000 and without any probs. Well i decided to push the fsb to 150, btw, the voltage is still at default ie, 1.7v....ran the same tests as above, still no problems, this chip seems to be a good one, idle temps are 26c , 4 to 5c above ambient
at 150fsb, this puts me at around 1125, unfortunately, i can't push my fsb's up more than 153,3 which would in any case hardly give me much more speed. BTW, did take it to 153,3 but system froze in 3dMark2000, could be that the proc wants a bit more voltage, or my pc133, cas3,mem aint good enough to get me past 153,3.

YEP shes crying for more CV mine would not run that high without upping the CV. if you need any help with this CPU dont be afraid to holler but i think when you up CV you will max out your MB and be done for a while. remember to keep an eye on temps by the way mine runs at 25C to 26C at idle too depending on ambient temps

I think you're right about upping the cv some, but also like you said, i aint gonna help me much since the system appears to be rock stable at 150fsb and to go to 153,3 fsb i will need to up the cv, not really worth it for the little bit of a speed increase between 150 & 153fsb....Maybe later on i'll invest in a mobo that has higher higher fsb's....but i'm happy for the time been to sit at 1125 if i need to, currently at 1088, but is also stable at 1125 as i already mentioned....but i''ll keep it at 1088 for now and let it burn in a bit more before going to 1125.

Glad to hear it all worked out for you.

The 1 Ghz chip at 150 rock solid is a treat... enjoy!

I was actually surprised to get it to 150fsb and at the default voltage as well,1.7v,..guess it's one of those chips....pitty, my mobo does not really support higher fsb's than 153,but anyway, i satisfied to run at 1125...

I jsut have a quick question. Do you have to send the old proc in or willl intel trust that it's dead. Not that I would have any alterior motives with such information. Just general knowledge.

Nope, i bought the 800E from an OEM dealer
{ Mustek }, had the proc about 8 months, just took the proc ino them told them what had happened, they obviously tried to test the thing, but we all know that if a proc is dead, it's dead...they had no problem exchanging the proc...but instead of taking an 800 proc, i asked them if i could pay in the difference and get the 1Gig, which they also had no problem with...
