Hey I have a celeron 500mhz with an asus P2B motherboard and gigabyte slot1 adapter.. i'm having troubles overclocking it.. i can do 7.5x75 quite easily, but when i put it to 7.5x86.. it's not really stable.. when I play serious sam or quake 3 it aways comes up with illegal opperations and when I try to path some games like sof.. Also unzipping some things as well. I set the voltage to 2.4 and using a chrome orb.. i tried 7.5x100 but that wouldn't work at all.. wouldn't even start up.. so what is my problem? is it the cooling? mobo? slot1 adapter? please help.. or I also wouldn't mind help to make it stable at 7.5x86.. thanks alot

Does your board have a jumper for "coppermine" cpu's? some boards need this to be set before they will work properly...also is your slot adapter coppermine ready? some slot adapters are compatible with PIII's but not with PIII coppermines.
2.4v is kinda high for any celeron/PIII....I would try at 1.9v @ 100fsb, and see if that works. remember when you go from 83 to 100mhz you will have to make changes to your pci/ agp settings. Is your memory pc100 compatible? I have a stick of pc66 that will not boot at 100mhz. Do you have adequate cooling?
If I think of anything else I will modify this post, and good luck,
Doc
P.S. I forgot to say Welcome to the forum....if you stay here long enough you will learn a lot
Doc, I think you're getting a couple things confused, easily enough done in this situation. The Celeron 500 is NOT a coppermine CPU and the default voltage is higher than the coppermines (2.1v maybe, I don't remember exactly, but 2.2v and 2.3v are perfectly acceptable on these older Celeron I chips).
The last chip in this line of Celeron I chips was the 533 (that's also the first in the line of the newer Celeron II coppermines). That means the that core is already nearly maxed out. The 75 FSB overclock is probably about as good as it gets, sorry.

YES!! You are correct sir.
I had one of these, and it just won't go very far. It's already a maxxed Katmai (sp?) chip. Don't bother, buy another celeron or even P3, it's a waste of time.
