i just watched 40days40nights
haha, thats an awsome movie. i was expecting it to be more of a chick flick, but there was more guy humour in it than chick flick humour
and yes, fear and loathing in las vegas is an AWSOME movie. my favourite part is where he wakes up in the room, and theres about 3 feet of water on the floor, theres american flags painted on the walls in ketchup and mustard, and hes wearing an alligator tail, and has the microphone duct taped to his chest.
lol
and sorry everyone for posting this in the wrong place. i cant get into general discussion yet.
so consider this a...what kinda movies do you like to watch while on the computer thread?

You dont use the computer related discussion as your own Off Topic Forum.
But one of my favorite movies has to be Monty Python And The Holy Grail.
This will get bumped to Gen Disc. or deleted, sooner or later.
Anyway, my favorites:
Fight Club
Monty Python's Holy Grail
And for good ol' cheap laughs: Kung Pow

American psycho cracks me up.. the scene where he drops the chainsaw down the stairwell is just plain funny. I also love watching Donnie Darko and How High. House of 1000 corpses was pretty crazy too.

My all-time favs are:
Comedy
Animal House followed closely by Blazing Saddles
Action
Matrix and LOTR Trilogy
Drama
Cecil B. DeMille's The 10 Commandments
Horror
The Thing tied with the original Poltergeist and The Exorcist
Suspense
The Entity (even though it is classified as Horror. I think it is more suspenseful than horror)
Sci-Fi
Star Wars Trilogy and Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Best all time scene in a movie: The Helicopter attack from Apocalypse Now.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail is one of my favorites. Also the classic star-wars, and some other older classics like spaceballs. Bond movies have always tickled me. The one time i've laughed the hardest though was: Watching monty python flying circus on BBC one night, and it did the killer joke act. Intermidetly throughout production there were killer cars. I almost died that night.
I dunno, I don't find Monty Python stuff funny. I don't know why. :-/

I notice many people saying Monty Python,
I ask why, though I found them funny as a child, in part because of my father, I can not even fathom any of the Monty Python movies as making a top 50 Movie list,
It would be like putting Mr Bean on a list for Top TV comedy, sure he is funny but hardly would he rate as a Top Comedian.
My Reason for Choosing Remember the Titans is basically
I can watch it over and over again, never growing tired of it, It is Always Moving watching it,
a favorite line,
"This is no Democracy, this is a Dictatorship, I am the Law."
"Attitude reflects leaderhip, Capitan"
I strive to Lead in ways that reflect positive attitudes, and I just like the coaching theory "Coach Boon" uses.

The best film I have ever seen must be "Burnt by the Sun" by Nikita Mikhalkov. The story takes place in Soviet in the mid thirties and is about a hero from the Bolshevik revolution and his family.
Other really good movies are "Black cat, white cat" by Emir Kusturica, "The Big Blue" by Luc Besson, and "The Postman" with the excellent Massimo Troisi.
(Sadly none of these films would ever have the chance of being viewed by the masses. There's just not enough violence, tits and car chases in them to appeal to the Hollywood producers. Sure, watching someone being bashed with a bat without getting as much as a scratch could be entertaining. But hardly touching and nothing I have been impressed by since I was twelve.)

gonna have to say oceans eleven, when ever its oln hbo i just gotta watch it. weird.
Ah ha, so this is where this thread ended up.
Monty Python appeals to people, I dunno why, but I know that the Holy Hand Grenade made me die laughing because I had previously played Worms and didn't quite get why the grenade was there, other than to kill everything that moves.
I notice Fight Club is a favorite here, good to see that, it's considered a cult-classic, much as Holy Grail lol
Hackers, as most people on these forums will tell you, was horrible as far as accuracy is concerned. I rather liked Swordfish, even though accuracy and reality sat in the backseat, watching explosions and sex bicker with each other
How many people have seen 2001: A Space Odyssey? I think I'll be watching that tonight :D

Still nothing beats Fear and Loathing in Los Vegas!!
Specifically the scence where they take Ether and the famous line: " What are you crazy man!! This is bat country!!"
However one of the most compelling movie I still have ever seen was Schindler's List. It was the only movie I can think of that almost moved me to tears.
Now the most f***d up move I have ever seen was Momento. Wow is all I can say. The entire movie plays in reverse. Its a total mind-job! It has the same kinda feel as Fear and Loathing In Los Vegas, but much crazier!
_______
My friends tell me that Requiem for a Dream is also very good movie.

OK, i posted my movies but I want a re-do:
I just got home from seeing the passion of the christ and all I have to say is I blows all movies out of the water. This has been the first movie literally in my life where no one spoke during or leaving the theater. And yes as a man i can admit i almost cried.
I was always a non-believer. I have been teetering on the edge of following or not following. And this movie pushed me over that fine line to follow the right path.
SEE IT PEEPS it is THE movie to see.
Comedy: Any Jim Carrey movie. The guy is one of the funniest actors I've seen.
Drama: 12 monkeys (it's also a sci-fi movie, but it has an awesome story line!), Memento, Radio.
Sci-Fi: Final Fantasy: Spirits Within, neon genesis evangelion, cowboy bepop, The Fith Element, Minority Report.
Horror: Ring, Alien movies, Predators, 28 days.
Action: Gladiator, matrix, X2, spawn, Saving Private Ryan.

Im probably missing a few but these are definitely some of the best movies ever made, if you dont agree...Youre wrong.
So many good movies, and having worked at blockbuster for a few years I've seen way to many to count so here are a few of my faves.
Mummy/Mummy Returns
Pitch Black
Double Take
Sci-Fi channel versions of Dune/Children of Dune
Donnie Darko
Romeo and Juliet (DiCaprio version)
and a truly great movie, I'll just leave you with a quote...
PC LOAD LETTER?!?! What the **** does that mean!?!
Okay fine, it's Office Space =P
Lets see, in order.
Fight Club
The Professional
Donnie Darko
Requiem for a Dream
American Psycho
Pitch Black (had to add it), Chronicles of Riddick should be awesome.
(theres more but this should be enough)
I admit, im a big fan of f'ed up movies.
"Dead Man" and "The Ninth Gate" were both good if you like Johnny Depp. I'm a big fan of his work. You gotta like an actor who seems to pick roles based on what would be fun for him to play rather than what will make the most money.
"The Usual Suspects" is a classic. The more times I see it, the more little "clues" I spot along the way that point towards the twist ending.
"Dial M for Murder," "Vertigo," "Rear Window," pretty much anything by Hitchcock are all great movies. The man was very much ahead of his time.
If you like horror and science fiction, "Event Horizon" isn't bad.
"Seven Samurai"--great movie, especially the long original cut. Several others of Kurosawa's were good, too--"Rashomon," "Yojimbo," etc. "Yojimbo" was remade as "Last Man Standing" with Bruce Willis back in the mid-1990's. Both versions are pretty good stuff.
For westerns, "Little Big Man" and "Unforgiven" are both great. That Sharon Stone/Gene Hackman "Quick and the Dead" movie was pretty good for a sort of mythological, tongue-in-cheek take on westerns.
Oh, and "The Princess Bride"! How could you guys forget that one? :)
Well, this list is long enough. Cinema is kind of a hobby of mine. :)

been a while since i checked this thread, and since posting in it i've seen one of the best movies ever...and no one seems to have mentioned it:
Eternal Sunshine on the Spotless Mind
with jim carrey and kate winslet. oh my god, that movie makes me feel like crying. one of the only movies i've ever seen thats immensly happy, sad, and depressing at the same time. such a beautiful film. if you're a fan of charlie kaufman (adaptation, being john malkovich) rest assured that this is his best movie yet. i'd be willing to say its probably in my top 5 of all time, and thats saying something.

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation cracks me up every time I watch it. I like to try to watch it once a year, around Christmas time.
Office Space, Grosse Pointe Blank, American Beauty and True Lies get honorable mention.
Generally, I enjoy any movie that is either really funny, thought provoking, or has great cinematography. A couple thought provoking ones that didn't make it to the honorable mention list are:
Voices of a Distant Star, One hour photo, Bowling for Columbine, Operation Takedown (the Kevin Mitnick Story), and Neon Genesis Evangelion (sorry, I like it ;))

Well put, Illwillchill! :)
I've seen this thread long enough. Time to throw my two coppers in:
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas:
"You people voted for Hubert Humphrey, and you killed Jesus!"
I love Hunter S. Thompson's writing style. I strive to be able to write like him someday. This movie is phenominal, because it pretty much outlines an entire culture. The man speaks volumes. The camerawork is wonderful, and the dialog is pleasantly disjointed. Depp and del Toro play off of eachother like they've been the best of friends for years. An excellent film. [An Asside: Hunter S. Thompson actually came to Johnny Depp and asked him to play his role. They were together pretty much every day for like 4 months, and drank a case of rum every day between them]
Memento:
You see, I have this condition, where I can't make new memories . . .
This film is not like any other I've ever seen in my life. It kept me guessing right until the end. It's shot entirely backwards, and just when you think you've figured it out, BANG! It throws you a curve and you think "WTF!?". Again, a wonderful use of camerawork, and the acting stands on it's own.
The Alien Quadrilliodgy:
"This is Ellen Ripley, last surviving crewmember of the Nostromo, signing off . . ."
"That's it man! Game over man! Game over!"
"What about matches? Do we at least have the capacity to make fire? Humans have enjoyed that priviledge for quite some time now . . . "
"Hey, I thought you were dead!" "Yeah, I get that a lot."
These films pretty much created a genera. When you think vicious aliens, you ultimately think of this franchise. I like all 4 films; they all have their merits, but personally, I like Aliens best. Out of the four films, it's the best shot and best directed, and even though it's really old, it has some of the best creature effects (I'd almost say it's better than Resurrection it that respect) from the franchise. All four are fantastic films, and if you haven't seen them, pick up the director's cut of each version one weekend and give 'em a spin. They're a part of history.
Requiem for a Dream:
"Ahh! Maid Merrian! Welcome!"
The music makes this film I think, moreso than anything else. Clint Mansell is a GOD! Don't get me wrong, it has some of the nicest camerawork I've ever seen, but everything pales in comparison to the music. It's a terribly depressing film, but I still like it none-the-less.
Resident Evil:
"I'm missing you already . . . "
This film has stuck to me, and I don't really know why. The story has holes you could drive a Mack truck through, the plot is disjointed unless you've played at least Resident Evil 1 (and even then, there's no familiar characters. Jill Valentine isn't introduced until Resident Evil: Apocalypse). I guess it just strikes something primal in me. I'd love to be down there w/ a minigun and just start shooting, and not stop until I ran out of ammo, or the transmission in the gun burned out. Just something about mindless killing (even if they are already dead) hooks me. That, and Milla Jovovich looks (as always) fantastic ;). [An Asside: Check out www.re2.com. Look at the building in the center of the Flash animation. That's Toronto City Hall. Most (if not all) of the film was shot in Toronto]
Bubba Ho-Tep:
"Lick the dog dick of Anubis, you ass wipe."
This movie is wonderfully funny, and I'm shocked that nobody else has mentioned it! If you like The Evil Dead, you'll like this. Bruce Campbell is a wonderful actor. Excellent comedic timing. Hell, I almost thought he WAS Elvis there for a minute. The camerawork leaves something to be desired, but the movie was well paced. Funny at times, serious at times, and even sad at times. Very well written.
The Shawshank Redemption:
"I was straight on the outside. Never did anything illegal. I had to come to prison to become a crook!"
One of the few Stephen King adaptations that came off right, and Lord knows that there aren't very many that do. Again, excellent acting and camerawork in this one. A very touching story of a man done wrong by society, but he doesn't really hold a grudge against it. Just runs away and starts his life again. Almost better than the book (but not quite).
I have more, but I'll leave this for now. I'll add more later.
Also, why not tell us why you like a movie, not just that it's your favourite.

sorry for double post, but im not sure how to put 2 quotes into an edit
EDIT: crash893, thats the eye/camera from HAL lol good job on that.
but unlike most people here, I HATER :bang head LOTR:ROTK, I thought the first one was good, second one was pretty cool, but ROTK was a mess. It felt like 30 writers had 60 ideas on how to end it, and it was just more of the same battle scenes.

Saw what? I listed like 50 movies lol. And I have to add Blazing Saddles and Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. And I have to say, Mean Girls was pretty funny. My friend downloaded it though. I wouldn't pay 10 bucks to see a movie about girls in highschool.

And the ones that go without saying but I'll say them anyway: Starwars; LOTR
The Green Mile.

requiem for a dream was great... i still haven't seen it from the beginning
what about tremors? i like the tremors movies not for thier plot or graphics, but for thier quirkiness...
and with this being an overclocker's hang out, i am TRULY surprised BTTF hasn't been mentioned, either... that trilogy should be in every geek's library

some of my all time favorites are the back the future movies... i finally got the trilogy on dvd :D
a few more that i like are forrest gump and apollo 13. not just cause they have tom hanks (he is one hell of a great actor), but apollo 13 because i used to be in love with space when i was in middle school...
forrest gump just because it has a great story of a man who is never fully aware of what happens in the world but he lives his life to the fullest and does what he can because he doesn't know to do anything different. forrest gump is actually one of the only movies that has ever made me cry, but it is a great movie :)
my favorite movie at the present would be The Day After Tommorrow everything in that movie was awsome except for the wolvs(can't even spell today) could have been anmiated a little better (you could tell that they where graphically done).
other favorites
space balls
starwars series
matrix series
tremors series
volcano (the one that sprouts up in la);
I have many other favorites but I will drop whatever I'm doing to watch one of theese.
whole buncha others but i can't think.
lord of the rings for drama/action... definitly monty python and the holy grail, or the wayne's world movies for comedy

Horror:

Probably because I just saw it a month ago. I couldn't believe I had gone that long with out seeing this movie when it was over.

Action:
Predator
too many sci-fi movies I like already so I put this here. Can't beat it.
Sci-Fi:

Could go on and on and on in this catagory so I just put down what I could think of off the top of my head.

Army Of Darkness
Noticed this category and these two movies were strangly absent in this thread so I put them down.

I had to do a book+movie comparison on this back in highschool (boy does that make me feel old now). The book was much, much better. im still trying to get my girlfriend to see it, she uses excuses like she doesn't want to puke or stuff like that :p
Of course the book was better, thats why I didn't list LOTR. Cause it's my favorite book not movie. I would like to read it but theirs a ton of other books turned in to movies that I want to read first. It, any other number of Steven King books, or any of Tom Clancy's. I just don't have time to read them all.
