I get the infinite loop error on my new PNY GF fx 5600. Screen goes black during 3D apps. After much research, I found it relates to a conflics with NV4 driver and the VIA chipset on my Mother board.

So I think switching to an ATI (9700 or 9800) will cure this. During my research, I've found the infinite loop error is widespread and can be duplicated with any chipset and video card. 1 of many a research page (http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=64) I think this is just a disclaimer so via doesn't have to own up. Nvidia and PNY have similar finger-pointing disclaimers.

If anyone has info, advice, or just a straight answer on this I'd love to know.

Try diasabling large system cache. (I'm pretty sure thats the name)

Thanks, could you be more specific about the cache? What cache?

Windows 2K does this as well. The last time I ran into problems with this error, it was a combination of DX8, Win2k, and the Nvidia Vanta. The infinite loop error is just a generic error message windows spits out, and could be any number of things causing the problem.

yeah, I found that was the case in research. Anything could cause it. Very frustrating. I have done much troubleshooting, and still can't isolate the problem. I've tuned down the settings on the card and it seems to last longer before blacking out., What is the system cache suggestion you're talking about craig588?

And the real question is: will switching to ATI help?

thanks

You said your 5600 is new; how new? Have the loops been happening ever since you got the card? What were you using before then? It may be necessary to do a clean install of Windows XP. I had the same problem once before and the only way I could solve it was by reinstalling.

thanks, Shade,
New complete build with a transplanted hard drive. I uninstalled old Nvidia drivers from my GeForce2, let Windows install default drivers (which turned out to be Nvidia 36.02 maybe?) then install new drivers. Brand new card.

Man I really appreciate the info on this. I don't mean to repost for troubleshooting. I had a similar post last week trying to fix this, I am now considering replacing with a 9700 or 9800 (both pro) Which I hope will fix the issue.

I would still like to hear any troubleshooting ideas and answewrs to the main question about replacing with ATI.

Thanks again...
man, I just can't seem to write a short replay to anything...

Hmm. If you just switched the hard drive from an old motherboard, that could be one of the issues. Try booting with the Windows XP install CD and do a repair install - it'll leave your copy of Windows intact, but it'll update the system settings for changes and the like.

I was having this problem a while back, I did a lot of research and wrote up an article/list of possible solutions. There is no ultimate fix, but some of the solutions might help.

Fixes for Infinite Loop Error (http://www.geeksonline.org/index.php?module=Articles&id=1)

Good luck, I know how much of a pain infinite loop can be!

That's a great article mdc. I didn't run across that one when I was checking into this initially. I did see the Via article mentioned in yours, though. I've tried about half or more of those suggestions and I'm about to give up and get the ATI card. It seems the Nvidia drivers and VIA chipset are the conflict.

Thanks for the compliment. As I stated in the article one of those solutions will not necessarily fix the problem. You may be forced to get a different card. You do have the newest chipset drivers right?

Yes, newest chipset drivers. I'm re-installing windows now and going to re-install newest drivers again after that. Staying out of the loop article on viaarena pretty much says via is not the problem. I read that as "don't look to us for a fix"
ATI here I come. And I so don't have the money to throw at this problem that should be correctable:mad:

well to heck with this. I just fished out my Compaq Athlon machine and the card fails in that too. With a fresh XP install, newest VIA drivers and newest drivers from NVidia. This card is just bad. A good two weeks of my life wasted. This particular thread was meant to ask about brand switvhing and "will that fix this problem," well I guess it will.

Case Closed. Thanks to all who offered great suggestions. I'm sure I'll have more questions for ya when I get my new ATI.

Thanks again,
Steve
