The onchip cache, referred to as L2 cache, which stores most frequently used commands, is 4 times larger on the PII (512) than on the celerons (only 1288).
This allows for more complicated computations to be done faster.

The extra RAM and possibly which version of windows is being used, can also speed things up... and your bus speed is 100MHZ versus 66mhz on the celerons... your friend could overclock his cpu, you won't be able to go too much higher. He'll have you beat if he ever does.

im sorry you are talking crap, i have used my celeron at defult speed on a 440lx cipset with 64mb pc66 cas3 ram and trashed a 600MHz Pentium 3 with 128MB ram, it is all down to the windows and config in the bios, when you get a new processor you MUST do a clean install of windows or it will be slow

You say tomato, I say tomatoe... but I say it with a bit of a smile, and not a scowl.

Agreed, a clean install of windows is a good practice, but I disagree that cache plays no role in performance variables.

the cache size has a HUGE effect........reinstalling windows only made my system run more stable. I didn;t see that much difference in performace though.

Does you rfriend have a ApolloPro 133A? thats prob why his celly sux. my celly 700 feels slower them my p2 333@350 on a bx

There are many things that can effect performance. The P2's did have a bigger cache but it only runs at 1/2 speed. The Celerons cache is at full speed this balances things out pretty well. Chipsets make a big differance to I have always found the Intell 440BX to be the top speed demon. I have had a few via apolo based boards and they were pitiful against the old 440BX. Bios versions, drivers, memory, hd speed, video hardware can all make a differance in the "feel" of a machine. Also try running some game benches that use SSE, try Sandra to and you will see the P2's age

Guess we posted at the same time, great minds think alike!
