View Full Version : Motherboard Advice
Hi -
i've got hold of a SECC2 PII 400/515/100.
What sort of motherboard should I be looking for? I hope to use it to replace an old p100 running my firewall, but it would be nice to do a bit of overclocking for fun.

This depends on what you are looking for. There are quite a few reviews on the front page of Intel mobo's.
Everyone has their favorite manufacturer. Usually the one that served them the best. Abit and Asus are good boards but get a little spendy. I just picked up a Soyo with the VIA chip set for about 80$ shipped. The BX chipset will give you better faster memory bandwidth. The VIA chipset will give you 1/2 AGP but not very high V adjust. I guess it boils down to what you want and how much you want to spend.....Hope this helped..

The only modern Slot 1 mainboard is the Abit SH6. It's an i815e board, so it accepts original Celerons, PII's, Celeron II's and P3's.
It makes sense to buy an i815e chipset. You'll be able to run old and current CPU's. The catch is that the SH6 mobo costs ~$150, and isn't easy to find, AFAIK.
A 440BX mainboard is tailor made for PII's. Intel stopped making 440BX chipsets, so mainboard makers won't offer this chipset forever. I suggest searching for Abit BE6-2's, Soyo SY-6BA+III and SY-6BA+IV, and the Asus P3B-F.
