i installed knoppix 3.3 with no problems. Wasnt a remaster or anything, and the install went smoothely...now, the machine boots, gets to a point and asks for Username and Password. Then i dont know what to do. I didnt tell it to ask me for a password when i installed it, i get no errors...any ideas?

Which installer did you use?

When installing- you will set a password for both root and knoppix. If you can't remember doing this, I suggest you reinstall.

If you'd prefer a graphical login instead of a text mode login, when prompted about wanting to install KDM, choose yes.

You'll have to boot into single user mode in order to create users and passwords then I believe. I would just reinstall; however, if you do figure out the passwords and user names.

the command to start X11 is startx

startx<enter>

at this point either X11 will start or it will not start.

If it doesn't start its either because its not installed, or the ect/X11/XF86Config or XF86Config-4 files are not properly configured.

I would think that knoppix would take care of these configurations for you automatically so I would imagine that you could have missed something during the installation?

still, I would try to type startx just to see if it works.

what is KDM?

must be the graphical logon.

don't you mean KDE? K-desktop?

If u see something like KDE maybe you want to install that too????

Really what you should do is...

get to the login, log in a user, type

startx

if that doesn't get you into kde, I would try to reinstall.

If you end up with the same result after a reinstallation in which you look for a KDE to install, remember the installation program should also ask you questions about your mouse/monitor/videocard/ possibly keyboard. If it does not ask those question then I'm assuming it either attempts to autoconfigure them or it leaves the XF86Config and XF86Config-4 files for you to create. I've never used knoppix though.
