I want to upgrade my oem speakers to some 2.1 speakers. I don't have any room for 5.1 and these are mainly going to be used for gaming and dvds. I need these to be in the 30-50$ range. I have seen plenty of them that look good, but the reviews are inconsistent at best. Any Ideas?

Well, you won't get GREAT sound for $50, but check out the Logitceh Z340s:

They look pretty decent for the money.

One of the most memorable listening experiences I had with home stereo speakers was with the Martin Logan SL3 electostatic speakers. I remember walking into the grand opening of an audio store and as I was walking in I actually thought they had hired a band for the opening. I was really amazed when I discovered the music was being played on these speakers.

I recently bought a set of electostatic speakers for use on my computer that fit your requirements and that I could definitely recommend to you. I didn't have the same moment of epiffany that I did when I first heard the Logans but the sound and the build quality of the speaker are very, very good. The speakers are Monsoon PM-14. They come with 2 flat pannel speakers and a sub with an 8" driver.

They are really cool looking speakers and the best part is that they are within your budget. Several are being sold on eBay right now - you might be able to score a deal. I attached a link to a review if you are interested.

thanks for the suggestions. I wondered about those monsooons, I couldn't tell if they were good, or sucked. I can't find any at a good price on ebay right now, I'll keep looking. Keep the suggestions coming
