View Full Version : Monitor trouble

Hi all,
I went and got a new monitor, it's a HP P1110 21" CRT. I've been trying to configure the color both through Windows and the controls on-screen. However, I can't seem to get the colors right.

Grays always appear as dark greens for example, i.e. the background of these forums (when my brightness is turned up) appear as green. The default monitor settings don't work, and i've run Adome gamma tool but it didn't really change much at the end.

I've also downloaded the proper drivers from HP's site to no avail. Any idea what might be wrong? Or of any way to easily auto-configure all the settings so it'll work? (like a program or something. I've been playing around with the settings for a while but i can't get it to work right, my other monitor seems fine...)

Also, when i get a setting that's nearer to what looks on one thing (i.e. the forums, Word background for greys, notepad for white, etc), the rest are all way out.

Thanks, A24.

***EDIT***

Addendum to post:
I've also test booted it on another computer, and my laptop. The grey appeared green on both, as usual, so i think it's a monitor problem not related to the setup on my main rig.

Odd, i booted it on my lappie twice, and it seemed greener the second time :/

Also my oranges/reds look too..... orange/red ;)

sounds like the RBG settings are jacked up, you said you reset them?

I reset to default (which looks worse than my current ones), have been fiddling with the settings in both the windows thingy in properties, and on the monitor. No luck :/

Oh, i just unplugged the monitor cable (it's one of those two-ended ones that plugs into the monitor, not a fixed one) and turned it around and tightened it up just in case. No luck :(

Oh yea, i've been playing with both the monitors (my old one and this one, on my 9700 pro with VGA and DVI ports), and i put the DVI-VGA adaptor onto the new monitor and put it on that port on my graphics as secondary (I mainly had it set up as the main one). Still no luck

If I turn the brightness right down, it looks more "black", but you can still see it's very dark green and there's no gray.. :(

EDIT: oops soz, i reset some defaults, including like "color purity", but the actual RGB can't be reset. I've tried them all on 50%, 100%, 0%, and other varients though :/

Many times these Sonys in disguise will have a color return feature - try that if it has it. This feature needs the monitor to be on a while before being used, and will automatically recalibrate the monitor to factory specs.

Well, it's been on for a few hours... No option yet :/

Time for a trip to the shop I'm afraid... hopefully it's under warranty. You'll need to get it to an authorized Sony shop with the correct equipment to realign it.

No, i don't have a warranty, i just got it second hand today :/

This one doesn't have a trinitron tube? In that case you might get lucky and find RGB screen and drive controls inside on the CRT neck board. If you wish to try adjusting these yourself, use an insulated tool and be sure not to touch anything you don't need to while it's turned on. There's an adjustment procedure over at www.repairfaq.org under both the TV and Monitor sections.

If the controls aren't in there, you may be out of luck.

I've just got back from taking it into the computer shop, i'll let you know how it goes :)

****EDIT****

Right, not good news. I didn't actually get the call back from the shop, someone took it for me, but basically it's £80+ ($140ish), because they have to open it up and do something. The person who took the call for me knows nothing about computers, and isn't sure what they said it was that is wrong. Do you people think it'd be something I could look at myself? or is it best to get the shop to do it?
We tried contacting the seller but he wouldn't have any of it.... problem with buying privately i guess :/

I took the computer into my college, but was told we aren't allowed to open them (like, i was going to see if the tutor could fix it) because it's too dangerous. I got the monitor put in again to get repaired, i've just got it back and it's still not fixed, plus i've just spent £80 getting it fixed... So i'm going to call them back on monday and tell them it's still not working and could they take another look at it.

I also booted it up on another system on my network (Windows 2000), and my lappie on XP. It's just as bad on the lappie, but not quite as bad on the Win2k system (though it seemed worse on the second reboot for some reason). Any reason for this?

Do you think maybe that's why they thought it was fixed, because thier monitor displayed it fine? Or maybe they fixed something else unrelated? Or maybe they didn't fix it at all? Do any of you know what's wrong?

Thanks :)
