View Full Version : Dell...????
Hey I am running a P3 800EB, 200 mhz FSB, 384 mb PC133, Geforce 2 Ultra, and a X-Gamer 5.1 sound card...my question is can I overclock this guy, I have read tons on o/c and practiced some on my old p2 300 (cooling, BIOS, etc), but I have heard that Dells are real tough to impossible to o/c...and before I try anything or screw up anything I would like to know.
Thanks
Bub
There are 2 things that will make overclocking your system difficult. First is the fact it is a Dell. Dell don't use motherboards with overclocking functions on them, though that doesn't mean you can't overclock them, usually the clock gen will have several none standard options in it that just aren't enabled in the bios. A tool like SoftFSB can access them and I will send it to you if you would like. The second thing that will make things hard is that you have an EB cpu. This means it is running on a 133mhz FSB which doesn't give you much room for going higher, if you are very luck and the board has the options then you may well get to 166mhz fsb for 1ghz, though this is unlikely. a 150mhz fsb is a more practical aim, this would give you 896mhz or so as long as your ram and components handle the extra speed.
if u could email me softFSB i would be very greatful...also on the dell i am using the stock heatsink and fan...if I do o/c it I was thinking of using a peltier and some new thermal paste, would that be able to keep the processor stable at 896mhz?
Thanks again...

You would not need a peltier for your PC a good quality heatsinkfan HSF combo should keep yout temps in check with a good thermal compound and lapping your HS will help also. before I went out and bought anything I would try and see how you can do with softFSB as it does not work on all PC's If you overclocked your Dell and got a good overclock out of it you would be the first, at best you may get a mild overclock. Lack of adjustable core voltage to your proccesor will stop you from getting a good overclock as well softFSB does not have really good settings for FSB like a good overclocking motherboard if you really want to overclock your PC you might think about spending some money on a decent motherboard and then who knows what you will get as all CPU's will overclock differently check the CPU database and see what other guys have done with your CPU and that may help you decide if spending any cash is worth it.

If your Dell motherboard let's you go that high.. by using a SoftFSB and tune it upto 150mhz fsb.. that's an extreme overclock. you might need to get some cooling for your mobo too.. and yes..but the Peltier is more than strong enough to handle that level of overclock on your CPU. you'll just have to hope if you mobo can handle it.. good luck
update: Oops.. I didn't see Outhouse's post before me. I was bit late... :)
I would advise against peltier cooling, it really is an expert area not something someone only starting innoverclocking etc.. should consider. For now the most I would advise is maybe some extra cooling (Dell uses case fans I believe anyway) and maybe a better heatsink on the cpu.
ahhh...ok thanks for the input...I got softFSB will see if it will work soon...
The reason I suggested an peltier is because my father (electrical engineer), said it would keep it cool enough...
the better fans and heatsink is easier anyway...and if I can do a good overclock then I will start spending some cash :)
thanks again...
well if your fathers an electrical engineer and would asist you with the set up then go for it as long as you are willing to fork out for the setup.
But don't do it just for the sake of overclocking and mhz as there are easier ways, a good watercooled peltier setup would cost as much as a tbird an socket a board which would get you much higher performance and mhz

I was just wondering how he got that EB to 200Mhz FSB?
I'm guessing it was an error as it would be a silly speed, imaging it a 50mhz pci, the 100mhz agp isn't so inconcievable as I have had a tnt2 ultra at 133mhz.
