Alright my friend just set up his wireless net work. They are both roomates and one of them just got a new computer. The problem is that this thing has the speed of dialup and the consistancy of windowsME for uptime. I had to refresh the connection twice to get it to this page alone. Their router is a Linksys router. The 108.11g I believe. The wireless card on this computer is the zonet 1000XXXXX series. The current driver is the generic windows one for wireless cards which is dated for 2k3 and the latest edition of driver on the zonet webpage is from like 2002. Any ideas or tips on what tweaks can be done to get the speed of this network up and get it to be a little more reliable?

wireless network can be a bitch, has he tried moving his computer to a different part of the room, how far is the router from the computer?

Have you tried updating the firmware on both the router and the wireless NIC? I would try that as a first step. I would also use the older driver. The generic one that comes with windows may be causing problems. Despite how new it is, it is not coded specifically for your card.

They have a linksys router and this thing is only about 20 feet thick and yet the router signal is weak. Is there something that we can do to fix this? I don't want to have to put a coat hanger on it.

What is 20 feet thick? a wall? What is the wall made of?
A 20 feet thick wall will kill almost any signal, depending on the materials it's made out of.

sorry that wasn't typed right. The signal is going about 20 feet through two walls. The card says it could go through 30 meters indoors

Hmm... you could turn up the power a bit on it. 100mW of power should get you 300 feet indoors. See what the access point's power settings are, and what the card's power settings are.
Besides that, what kinds of interference is around? Any 2.4GHz cordless phones in the area? Or, for that matter, anything that will run on 2.4Ghz.
What's the makeup of the walls, are they just drywall and wood, or are they brick or concrete?
