Ok, I've been having this problem for awhile, I thought having the case manufacturer send me replacement front USB ports would fix it but that hasn't helped. Whenever I plug a device into the front ports I get an XP message saying "USB Device Not Recognized", etc. I click the popup and it takes me to a window that shows a "tree" setup with USB Root Hub (3 ports) at the top. Underneath are two instances of Unused Port, and one instance of Unknown Device. The USB devices I'm trying work perfectly if I use them on the rear ports. For some reason I think XP doesn't like the pass-through setup of these front ports maybe? Does anybody have any suggestions?

Does the device work ok in the ports on the back of the computer?

Yeah thats what I said, the device works perfectly on the rear ports.

O sorry, I didn't see that. Have you checked to see if the connectors are lined up with the right pins on the board.

Its not that kind of setup. Basically there is a cable that runs from the front ports to a card/plate you screw into one of the slots in the back of the case. You connect any ports in the rear that you want to use in the front to that card/plate so its basically kind of an extension from the back ports to the front. I don't know if that makes any sense or not.

so the front ports don't connect to the motherboard at all? are they like wires that plug into the ports on the rear then go through the case to the front, effectively making them just extension cables?

Exactly.
