View Full Version : lockups when idle/stable under load
I am running a Celeron 566@850 on an ABIT VH6T mobo. It ran fine and stable after a few days of Quake3 demo looping, 3dmax demo looping, and while running prime95 and seti@home. But after a few minutes of idling or mild work, the system just locks up. It has not locked up once under load. Anyone have an idea what the problem could be?
Welcome.
What other things besides whats in your signature are on your pc?
Os power supply, sound card, etc.
What is your cpu temp?
I am using a vh6t also and had that problem is was the sound card causing it but it will help to know more about your pc.

you have some power saving turned on that is powering down the cpu or hard drive???? If so, turn them off. That should help.

Yes, and I have also seen problems with (specifically) windows 2000 and the ACPI settings in the bios causing intermittent lockups. The power saving feature makes plenty of sense though.
I'm using win98se. I tried win2k but i had even more lockups. I have a 300w power supply (not sure of the brand), a SB Live! Value sound card, 10 gig Maxtor HD, 19 gig Quantum HD, 12x DVD-ROM, 10x/32x Acer burner, SOHOware NIC, and a D-Link USB NIC. That's pretty much everything else I have.
When idle the cpu was 35C and under load about 47C.
I had all the power saving settings off but still had lockups.

Could very well be one of these cards; I personally don't believe in pulling cards, especially if I am not willing to replace one that isn't compatable... I would wonder about your temps, I have similar temps and have nothing but issues with lockups (all temperature related). Although it hasn't worked for me (nothing seems to go smoothly for me with PCs except when I build them for others they work flawlessly), maybe an exhaust fan for the case is in order.
Ok I have the sb live value also.
Here is how I fixed it.
Go into control panel-system-device manager.
Select view devices by type. Find creative misc. devices then under that use proerties and disable the 2 items other than joystick port.
Now reboot and go into the bios.
In the pci-pnp section use manual and disable dma 1 & 3 and set irq 1 & 5 to reserved for isa.
There is a well documented bug with sb live cards and via chipsets. You can visit www.viahardware.com if you want to read more about it.
