is that a sign of death chip???

humm.....my friend got one P3 700 chip. and he told me last night when he playing UT, the pc suddendly freeze and he try to reboot but it won't post any more!! i try to look at it myself and saw that when i restart the pc, everything was normal, the cdrom LED flash, the HD start to spin up, but the monitor doesn't show any sign at all. but i still can feel that the chip produce heat out from it!! any idea?? i check the chip and see no crack or any bad sign on it!!

If everything boots up normally except there is no display, I would think you can rule out the chip. If the chip was dead, you would get nothing. Have you tried swapping the vcard or testing another monitor? Sounds more like a display problem than anything.

*edit*.. I just reread the beginning of your post... that is a mystery... it would not post at all when he tried it but did when you tried it?? Do you know if the peripherals lit up when he tried it, but nothing showed on the screen?.. or was it completely dead (no fans, no lights, etc..)? Do you know what kind of temps he's running?

Yeah, check the vid card, something similar happened to a friend of mine, turned out his vid card was fried.

Sometime gremlins just seem to creap into a system like this. I recomend removing the memory, cpu and vid card, then reseting the cmos and replacing them.

I work in tech support, what people say is sometimes different than what they do (meaning what your friend says may not necessarily be true or grossly inaccurate), so be weary of end users!..

Anyway, I had numerous AGP problems with bootup, and had to remove/replace the vid card 20+ times to get it to fire up. Dunno why, but gremlins sound pretty legit -- maybe it's the gnomes and gremlins at war.

thank for all guy, i just phone him and ask for true detail!! that sucker does oc that chip with his oem hsf!! and it boost up to 1Gig but still can play UT!! hahaha!! now i think he really does fly him own chip!! i try to swap my vid card into his pc b4 and also try that chip on my pc!! when boot, everything run exactly fine!! fan spin, HD spin, cd rom light flash but just no sign on monitor!! i personally don't think that is monitor fault!! :) oh! forgot to mention that i did clear the cmos too!!

What is the speed of the chip normally? Im curious to see how far he is OC'ing it on the stock hsf.

And i usually blame fuzzy green elves for my problems :)
