hey people im completely new to the world of overclocking and having recently purchased my new card (geforceFX 5900 ultra) id like to find out whats involved!
im seeing a lot of phrases such as flashing the bios being thrown around here and im assuming its all part of what you need to do. im not even sure what my card is capable of, the load temp is around 54degrees and 43 idle, if someone with some experiance of this card has overclocked it then could you post a bit about how it went?
if you could please post a bit about what i need to know i would reallly appreciate it.
thankyou!

doods...... believe me: your vga temp. 54C under load is not good, you need to add extra fans blowing the card underneath and on top. Maybe should try open casing??
FX5900 card was designed so smart     which can lower core speed and vcore automatically when it feels hot!!!. You get lower 3dmark score as the result.
You never know the max. core speed for fx5900 because you will get lower 3dmark score when you oc higher mhz. So you need to back off 10 mhz and bench again.

how do you find out the vga temps?
edit: oh I see temps now using rivatuner. It reports my Ambient temp at 34 and my core temp at 40. That's good at idle right? My card is flashed to 5950
edit 2: ok and at full load (2 rounds of call of duty) it was at 43 ambient, 53 core..
edit 3: interesting.. rivatuner said that at times the core went up to 71 while I was playing.. never noticed a drop in fps or anything, so perhaps 71 isn't enough to trigger the downclock?

i used coolbits to do a couple of test overclocks and got my 5900ultra stable at these settings
im not sure the difference between 2d and 3d
but here they are
2d:
475mhz core clock
1.2ghz memory clock
3d
580mhz core clock
1.2ghz core memory
it remained stable however during gameplay such as ut2004 the card hit 70degrees and the graphics became unstable and flickery.
based on that i have now lowered the settings significantly but does anyone have my card and if so what are your settings? unfortuanely i have a mini tower and the cooling isn't that excellent on it, its got a ****load of fans but because of its size it doesn't seem to shift much air.
also how do i flash the bios to the 5950? this seems the easiest way of making it permanent

54C under load is perfectly fine for a 5900U, they can run upwards of 90-100C at stock speeds and can handle up to 140C before they start to downclock from the built in thermal protection.
not meaning to steat the thread but how do you measure the VGA temp(i have a spare probe on my lcd monitor)
but whan i took off my last fan and heatsink from my other card it wouldn't boot up anymore (i am afraid)
but riva tuner will tell it?
and is it as good as coolbits, and do i need to get rid of coolbits
if i install riva?
thanks

up to 140C ??? What's cookin doc?? :p :p
BTW ressotami 580/1.2GHz is wow  but on air @ 54C ?? hmmm.... I don't beleive you . Can you upload your 3dmark03 score to futuremark ORB ?? I want to see 1.2GHz memory speed.
Follow this thread for FX5900 ultra to FX5950 ultra bios flash. It works great: get the 2 attachments made by larva; nvidia.zip and flashdisk leadtek.zip

BTW.... the slider only goes up to 1.14GHz u know ?? So I really want to see 1.2GHz memory :D :D

i have a leadtek 5900 ultra. it comes with winfox 2 which has temp monitoring and an overclocker for the card. i have the same temps as you do on idle and load. i can get it to overclock to 500 core/900 mem. i can go higher than that but it usually becomes unstable when i run games and 3d benchmarks and usually the nvidia drivers will push the mem clock down to default when it starts to overheat or become unstable.

i am now a certified believer in video card bios flashing. i just flashed my leadtek 5900 ultra into a leadtek 5950 ultra successfully!. before, i didn't get much success overclocking it even with coolbits or the winfox 2 overclocking utility it came with. i could only get the core up to 500 and the memory up to 900 if i was lucky. however, whenever i'd run games or benchmarks, the nvidia drivers or the card itself would automatically set the memory back to default clock speeds after some time. the gpu temps ran high as well at 52 C at idle and into the 60's on load so decided to go for the flash doing it exactly as described here 5900 Flash Mod (http://www.cluboverclocker.com/guides/5900_Flash_Mod/). i figured it would work perfectly since the bios they also used was a leadtek 5950 bios and it did! my pc recognizes my card as a 5950 with default clock speeds of 475 core/950 memory and the gpu temp at idle is now 42 C. :)

Well i am sure that just about anyone on these forums will tell you about the 5900 flash to 5950. but the question i have, and dont know if anyone will try it, is does the 5900se flash the same or wha? cause it has slower mem, so until someone tries it... i dunno if we will ever know... heh

im assuming that this flash mod will work on my pny 5900 Ultra 256 meg version considering all the tests are on a 128

yeah i didn't have a problem with that aspect. i had a 5900 ultra 256 mb card and after the flash my pc and all my 3d programs recognize it as a 5950 ultra 256 mb.
