hey, i opened up my case, SiSoft says my CPU temp is 123F but im able to touch the damn thing!(pardon language) ...and it feels more like 90...do you think my temp reading is accurate?...wouldnt it scald me if i touched it and the temp was 123?(dont worry...i tested the surrounding air temp to make sure it wouldnt be too hot

did you touch the cpu die directly? or the heatsink?

the heatsink would be cooler that the cpu itself

i touched the heatsink(the aluminum), and the backside of the processor(the plastic) and both were a lot cooler than 123F

Hey, welcome to the forums!!

Unfortunately, we're gonna need a lot more info than you've provided to be able to help you out...

What are you running for a:

CPU
heatsink/fan
motherboard
type of case, fan arraingment, etc...bla,bla,bla...

I used to run an A-Trend motherboard a while back, that didn't have provision for temperature monitoring onboard. Any type of monitoring software I used would give very strange readings. I think Sandra did too, come to think of it.... Always read astronomically high temps, due to lack of onboard monitoring devices.....

I highly doubt you are actually running that for a temp, but give us a bit of info regarding what you have for hardware, and we can help out a lot better...

ok, i have a PIII 600E Coppermine, ASUS P3V4X, ATI Rage Fury Pro, 128SDRAM, the CPU is running at 696MHZ and even at 600 it got like 120F on the monitor that came with the mother board, i think my thermometer is screwed or something because touching the backside of my CPU is like sticking my hand in lukewarm water

as well im running the fan/heatsink that are default...i have no extra stuff....but i think i should be fine...note:my system is now at 690 MHZ...

I dont think your that hot either i let my CPU get to 50C trying to burn in and my heatsink was really hot to the touch you could touch it just for as fast as you could and you could tell it was that hot. so to answer your question i do not think your temp reading is accurate but first you must make sure your heatsinkfan HSF is sitting properly on your CPU if the CPU is really that hot and the HSF is not sitting on it properly it will not transfer the heat enough to get the HSF really hot so make sure that is fine also just for the heck of it i'll ask your not using a thermal pad are you? a good thermal compound works much better then that pink sticky thermal tape.

goodluck

120F isnt that high its 48.89c to be close to exact.
Id reconmend upgrading to a better HSF.
Personally I like the Alpha line of HSF

I would recommend GlobalWIN (http://www.globalwin.com.tw)

Alpha or GlobalWin are both good choices, along with some Arctic Silver thermal compound.

This will get those temps under control, and might allow a higher overclock in the process...

I got quite a few degrees cooler when I replaced the Gorb that used to cool my Celeron 600 with an Alpha PEP66T, and in the process, gained 4 MHz of FSB.

Look into gettin a better hsf, if for no other reason than it will help the chip live longer...you might go faster too. =)

a little update...690 MHZ was not stable, i am now running at 672 with my case open and one of those personal fans on top of my processor(you now those little three inch fans you can get at the dollar store) and i have decided that those temps are completely wrong because it gave me 53C at idle and 52C 15 seconds after running 3D Mark 2001...i think i should be fine i hope to get an actual heat sink so i can push the CPU up to 800(thats all my Mother board can take, and hopefully i can get a new CPU over the summer(my bday's coming up)

Ya know....I never asked earlier....is this chip a slot 1 chip or a s370 "flip chip"? This would also give me an idea as to what to recommend for a hsf.

Actually, no...wait...that motherboard is a socket 370 board, not a slot 1 isn't it?....this may be a redundant question, then.....

Your chip is a "flip chip", right?? =)

its a slot 1...it is now running at 780MHZ

I have a slot 1 P3 with a GlobalWIN VOS32. If a VOS32 can fit on that celeron than definitely get it. The VOS32 is better than all other slot 1 HSF, even better than alpha.

But, the VOS32 is so damn big that it could possible take up to 2 DIMMS! (Thank God I had enough room between my Slot-1 and DIMMS. Look into it....very good HSF for your money, but again, I don't know if it will fit celerons.....

The ABSOLUTE BEST HSF you can get, pound for pound, that money can buy, is the Alpha P3125. If you're not familliar with this beast of a sink, check out the "Cooling" topic...there's some threads recently asking about them.

It's a BIG son-of-a-gun, sporting two 60mm fans on it. I've got one on my 600E, which runs at 1.95v/159FSB/954MHz, and my temps never hit 40c.

This is with two YS Tech 60x60x25mm fans on it. I'd likely get a bit cooler with twin Delta 38's, but would probably get complaints from the neighbors, too....=)

This puppy (with some Arctic Silver, as I mentioned earlier) will cool down that P/// of yours no problem. It's big, heavy, expensive, but it's the best thing this side of water, bar none.
