A friend of mine has some old records and such that he wants to record to PC and burn on CD, probably as MP3s. He wants to know what is th best editing software, something that will remove pops, hiss, and other anomolies associated with records. Also, what is the best capture software for this type of recording, and if they come as one package or two different brands? I don't do this kind of stuff, so I told him I would go on here and see what the pros had to say :)

TIA

The best you can get is Sonicfoundry's SoundForge 6.0

It's pretty much top-of-the-line, and rather simple to use.

Tell your friend to get ready to spend a long, long time in front of the computer. My dad has always said that he wanted to do the same thing, but when I finally got him set up using easy cd creator (I needed somthing SIMPLE), he only used it to burn 2 records.

The problem with record analog sources and digitizing them is you have to sit there and hit the stop and start button at the end of every song if you want individual mp3's.

As to your question, there are a TON of programs out there that will record from an analog source...roxio and musicmatch are just a couple of them.

Cool thanks guys. Those were the options I spoke with him about too, so we're good to go :)

I LOVE Adobe Audition 1.0 (used to be called cool edit pro.) It a professional program obviously, just because of the price. It has a twenty-something day trial. Theres sooooo many features like a 64 multi track editor. It has a hiss, pop, and noise remover that works really well. It's kind of complicated but it comes with a lot of presets to choose from. Download it here:

For hooking up the record player if the sound is really quiet you need to turn on the record player's built-in preamp or buy a $10 one from radioshack.

I found a simple program called "Total Recorder" from High Criteria.com that cost $12 to down load.
I use it to make copies of cassett tapes to CD's and it is easy to use.
