View Full Version : P4 1.5 mods
Hey i have the Abit TH7-Raid board with a P4 1.5 @ 1.8
The board is all screwed up and the voltage doesn't go as high as i specify it to be in the Bios.... I did the 1.85 volt mod for my P4 chip and i got the 1.85 option in the bios.... but the problem is with the board so this is what the actual voltage i get with the settings:
1.825 volt = 1.74 volt
1.85 volt = 1.77 volt
as you can see i'm not getting the full potential out of my chip as i can only take the voltage so far.... Does anyone know of any other mods for the P4 chip that maybe can give me an option to go to 2.0 volt? in this case with my board set to show 2.0 volt, it would give me approx 1.9
Another question... does anyone know of any Mods for my Abit TH7-Raid board? Any mods you have will be appreciated.... i feel like messing with the board soo...
any help will be greatly appreciated...
thanx in advance
Pete
theres a possibility this could actually harm performance. You've probabally seen a lot of talk about the p4 clock throttle. Up until now I've only seen issues on this that can be put down to the software intermediate clock throttles of like 12% and 25% which only apear to happen on intel boards so you are probabally ok as far as these are concerned. But overclocking above 1.8ghz and using such high voltages may push the temp high enough for the 50% hardware throttle to kick in which would give you worse performance than at normally clocked speeds
With the 1.85 volt P4 mod i was able to boot into windows at 1875, and stay there for 15 minutes until it crashed.
But if i actually do get a 2.0 volt mod i won't get tha thigh of voltage on my board because there's something screwed up with that, as I mentioned above. Right now my chip at 1830 runs at 100-115 degrees... and my heatsink NEVER gets hot at ALL. So I don't think i'll have any overheating problem.
Another thing... is there anyway to turn off the throttle feature?

If your heat sink isn't gettin warm, there has to be something wrong inbetween you heatsink and your core.......maybe using some AS2 or something simillar might help.
nah i have the Indigo Orb and i have Arctic Silver on it... the reason it doesn't get hot is because the chip doesn't run that hot.... and i have good cooling

Actualy your running pretty hot! 115F is too hot for a overclocked CPU when you push your chip close to the limits they cant take the heat the way a CPU runs when its at default. Ive heard about one orb product that actualy was not bad but for the most part the orbs are one of the worst heatsinkfan combos out there and your temps are showing it. Get a better HSF and you may gain stabilty at your higher settings. Before i took a chance of frying a p4 with high VC i would work on getting my temps in the 30C range.
you said you have good cooling do you have a good HSF on your northbridge? do you have good case cooling? have you rounded your flat ribbon cables and zip tied up the rest of the wires? also you have not mentioned about any of your hardware and memory that may help us out quite a bit. Also when you say it crashed did you get a BSOD or did it freeze or reboot?
When it crashed it just flat out froze on me.
I have 384 of RDRAM 800,
GeForce3 @ 221/530 (yes i tried running the PC with the card at default speeds),
SB Live X-gamer 5.1,
56k Modem ;p
40 Gig ATA100 HD
16x DVD
you can take a look at my case by going to this link http://www.tcnj.edu/~idzi2/pics/My System.jpg
The double fan is cooling the RAM, the pencils are supporting the fan that's sittin on top of my GeForce. I have cleaned up my case last week and now there's a lot of open space...... the Abit board i have has a BIG heatsink on teh Northbridge so that's not a problem.... and i Also put some arctic silver on that... i was thinkin about placing a fan on the northbridge sink...also i thought about putting another heatsink on top of that...
well what do u think?
What configuration do you have that 384mb of memory in? as you need to install in pairs
i have two 128 MB sticks, and two 64 MB sticks
all are 800s, same brand...
I have them set to 400 frequency, and i'm currently running my chip at 1800 so the frequency is at 488. The highest i've gotten into windows with was 500 frequency... it only lasted for 15 minutes before all hell broke loose.

besides getting your temps down on your CPU you should install a different HS on your northbridge dont stack then either, installing a HSF is what you want to do for mine i cut down a HSF that was for a AMD CPU to fit perfectly on my MB, cooling the northbridge will help out quite a bit sometimes when pushing your PC to the limits.
when my PC freeze's it's usually high temps that cause this if my CPU gets to 38C then it will lock up at 1255 and the other time it freeze's is lack of CV but i would not recomend raising your CV.
i have not been able to look at your case yet as i get the cannot find server screen when i try. but i'll look in a while again.
With my Abit TH7-Raid board the heatsink on the Northbridge is the biggest i've seen. You think if i mount a Fan on it, that should be enough?
My computer hasn't locked up all but one time on me, so i think even when it runs at 120 degrees it's still not overheating.
anyway here's the link to my system Pic....

thanx for your info
just copy and paste teh pic... i can't figure out the code stuff

My bet is that it is your ram, see if there is a setting for the rdram to 3x instead of 4x, and try the 3x when trying to go over 1800 with that 1.5gig.I am running at 1800 here, with my ram at 4x and in turbo mode,( I am running the asus p4t board),I havn't tried higher yet, but I do think my ram is about maxed out at 4x, and if I try higher, I will drop it to 3x. As to the voltage, You shouldn't need to bump it too high, I am running at 1800 @ 1.7v Of which I could do with a hs/fan, and presently run water cooled. There is an article somewhere on hothardware as to the abit board, and voltage issues with it, Abit claims that All P4 boards have the issue, mine dosn't tho.
Yea i have the option to go down to 300 frequency...
I tried that originally, but haven't tried since i did the 1.85 volt mod.... when i do have it set at 1.85 my voltage only goes from 1.74-1.77 so it's not too bad... and i was running at 1830... my PC doesn't boot at 1800 if i have less than 1.74 voltage... so i need that in order to run...
I will try the 300 freq. tonite though, and see how far i can take the CPU..
thanx for replying
would my performance go down since changing frequency from 400 to 300?
or does the added CPU speed make up for that?
Seeing as the p4 is the bottleneck hten maybe, but seeing as it's advantage is it's massive memory bandwidth then maybe not, you would have to benchmark to see as I don't know of any guides or people that have tryed this.
