I know you can unlock the Extra Cache on the new Durons. What do you have to do exactly to unlock them?

You must connect the last cut L2 bridge on the top of the chip. Although the only drawback of this is that you MUST have an unlocked chip or this will not work
What does that mean?
Unlocked, that is factory unlocked right? So nothing you could do anything about..?
If it's not unlocked, would it just not work, or would it cause harm to try to enable the cache?
Btw, it's the applebreads we are talking about right?

Yes, I mean if it isn't one of the new super-locked chips then it will work, if it is super-locked, it will just not work. And yea I'm talking about the Applebreds.
Does anyone know which ones are unlocked?
Do they do it the way they used to? ..to have the fastest clocked chip unlocked?
And just to be sure, there's no way of unlocking?
Maybe it's worth the try, it'd cost about 40$

On some of them the L2 cache is actually bad.
I have a week 45 and its unlocked. I connected the broken L2, and it worked and recognized the full amount of cache, however my OS kept crashing a few minutes after booting, so I had to remove the mod.

Well I see you got a VIA mobo. with this mobo you can at least change the multipliers on the fly from windows with a simple mod to the CPU.
Any chip which was made before week 39 is unlocked. there are some unlocked chips poping here and there which are later than week 40 but they are just a few.
In anyway you get a nice overclocking chip, and with a simple mod you can still change multipliers from windows.
check out GCPUID (my sig, red link) for some info.
If you would like to know more on this mod you can post here or just PM me.

That would help me out as well to OC since I don't have any options in the bios and only a jumper for 166 FSB (but no PC2700 DDR), however I'm running in linux off a bootable CD.
Why is no one making OC'ing software for linux?

hehe, I tried to make a very early Console version of GCPUID run on linux, but it failed to compile. thing is I have no idea about how to write linux apps and to change multiplier you must have access to CPU MSR and these are only available if you have a driver. I'm not sure how exactly that works in linux, but it is definatly a bit different. If I could easily compile the program for linux, believe me I'd do it :)
Well if you look at it, Windows 2003 Server is not too bad, and its free from M$ for a 180-day trial...

Yup, exactly why we need a *nix app developer working on this.
I can get by just upgrading to PC2700 and setting a jumper to add 400mhz...
