View Full Version : Anodizing worn through

I just recieved a Maze block from a fellow forum member, and I opened it up to clean it out. I noticed that underneath the aluminum top the anodizing has worth through. Is it worth being concerned over, and is there any way I can limit the effects, or prevent them? Galvanic corrosion = bad. :(

as long as u have a corrosion inhibitor, enough of it too, then there is nothing to worry about. Besides that, anodizing does nothing to prevent corrosion, it simple slows it down.

I see. I'm currently running about 10% antifreeze (Dex-Cool). Do I need to up the ratio?

eh.. should be okey, but adding another 5% wouldn't hurt ur temps, but would secure corrosion problems.
i personally use 20%. When i had a all aluminum block/copper radiator, well its my friends now so its been used for 3+years now with 20% coolant (green stuff) and the rest tap water and its still fine, no corrosion no nothing and from what i've heard, dex cool is better then the green stuff. I would still up it about 5% for safty.

Alright, I'll top off with a little antifreeze then.

dex-cool rocks. The old green stuff just isn't worth the money. All it does is help water from freezing. You'll void your warrenty on a new car if you don't use dex-cool.

.....WTF??
r u serious?!?
wow..
i'll remember that when i get a new car :p
as of now, i have there types of coolant in my 97 jetta (vroom) :D because i only top off, i'll flush it when i hit 100000 miles :)

Sorry To confuse. LOL Trying to make an example how good dex-cool is. Both of my cars, Honda and Pontiac, came with dex-cool and the warrenty states to use only that. I can see why since my pontiac is 8 years old and no corrosion what so ever. Has to be good with aluminum heads, steel block, and copper core rad.

I used dex-cool with a straight non- anodized aluminum water block before and it never corroded.

That's really good to know, thanks SysCrusher.

My ford has a V-10 with aluminum heads and it uses regular green antifreeze.

they all work, i think its just that the green stuff loses its corrosion inhibitering powers sooner then the dex-cool stuff.
some car sites say it actually becomes acidic, but thats like after years and years of usuage under extreme conditions (like in a car, lol). if its in ur case its going to heat up like 5c-10c max? boo hoo... :p

Dex-cool will last longer and not become acidic which is what will help eat away and corrode componants faster then you can blink an eye. Doesn't take years and years as you state. More like a six months. Though in a pc cooling loop, probably doesn't matter as much. I'v seen others use the green stuff in their cooling loop and still see corrosion over time. Never with dex-cool though.

I'v been in the process of rebuilding a 68 Impala Custom of my brothers. Every six months or so we ended up replacing the thermostat housing because it was just about ate away from corrosion. Since the new engine swap, nothing but dex-cool and never had to replace anything corroded again. With all the money spent on aluminum heads, pump, air intake I wouldn't even think of using the green stuff. Should of seen the old aluminum pump. The inlet and outlet necks were pitted to the point you could punch a screw driver though the pits.lol

Beerhunter: I'd make it a point to flush and refill on a regular bases with that V-10 using the green stuff. Could be a form of dex-cool with a different color?

Someone did a little experiment with different coolants. Dex-cool was just under water-wetter I believe with the green stuff just above plain distilled water.
