View Full Version : The Way-yay-yate is the hardest part.
I ordered my p3 700e over a week ago. Should be here today. I called the distributor monday and was told they had just got 2 in .."lemme see, we got 5 orders and 2 chips, hmmm , is one yours..................oh I see..................I was about to call and cancel the orders but ...........................yes you were the first order so one is yours. It'll be there thursday."
Quoting Metaxas "tic .. tic..tic.."
Also waiting on an all copper ThermalRight SK6. The anticipation is killing me! The HSF was shipped monday from Redmond Washington. The UPS tracker says it's in transit to the Greensboro NC hub.
Scheduled delivery date is June 26th. I'm thinking it will prolly be here tomorrow.

Nice cooler btw, ive just got a Vantec with "The Delta" for now then i turn to wetcooling. Have fun with that chip.

go find something to do to forget the wai, like explore the windows registry, tons of fun there, its freaky whats all in there. You could always go outside too.
What is this "outside"? LOL Guess I'm off to the registry. It is an amazing place. I have had to go in there to yank out some references to programs that were supposed to have been uninstalled, but when trying to re-install been told that the program was already installed.

Im guided by a force much greater than luck.

Got my stick of ram 1 day later than my case(well my friends stick of ram), the mail is odd. Like Mr.B said, whats the good word with regards to your shipment?
Ohh Slake i should tell you I'm going AMD, sorry their low prices have lured me away from Intel, i'll get the ol' cel 400 rig up and running until i get all my parts for the amd, if i can get 600 out of this 400 i'll die a happy man. I just really want to play with the mobo Mr.B suggested (Soyo 6BA+III) gotta get the mobo from Shadow and im all set. (im gone for 3 weeks so cant start till July)
1 more thing, Americans have mail on Saturday right? I'll check in tomorrow to hear the good word if it hasnt already come in, otherwise good luck with it Slake, you too are guided by the same force. Your gonna be just fine.

No deliveries for the Slakester today guys. That may be just as well though, I'm feeling "a bit shagged and fagged and fashed" (apologies to OpenFriday) . It was a long and exhausting week. We relocated our insurance office and like ANY move it's been tough. I'd like to be well rested before installing a new CPU and HSF. The anticipation kinda wears one down too. Yeah, OpenFriday we do have deliveries on Saturday, for now at least. The postal service is makin' noise about stopping it though. UPS has bussiness deliveries on Saturday. The chip will be delivered to the office and the SK6 will come to the house. So the SK6 may come tomorrow. Here are a couple of reviews of the production unit.
http://www.ocshoot.com/thermalrightcopper.htm This link has the best pictures of the heatsink http://www.casejunkiez.com/reviews/thermalright/sk6.shtml And of course there is the definitive pre-production OC.com preview http://www.overclockers.com/articles394/
Uh-oh, I am getting off topic. Shadow may have to scold me if I don't straighten up.
If I get in the mood I might just paint my case tomorrow after doing the yardwork, if it doesn't rain.
OpenFriday Yeah, I knew you were gonna do the AMD thing. I think that's great! When (and if) I get another big chunk of dough, I really want to give it a shot too. I'll go to school on your experience just like I did on Mr B with his Celeron 600. Gotta love this place!

Sad thing is Slake that im gonna have to buy this comp in installments, im just a poor student, I HOPE to get this done by end of September (my b-day) well most of it, the dual 30 gig's in Raid 0 will have to wait,
Athlon 1gig
Epox ddr mobo (forgot # something with a 7 at the end, its late at night and Andy's forums are messed up i think, sorry)
256mb pc2100
Inwin Q500 (got it yesterday)
Enermax 330 or 430, still debating.
my vantec with delta for now as a cooler, then very shorty after, watercooling.
everything else pretty much same old, cd rom, floppy, ect ect.
ohh yeah vid card, the modest Radeon 32mb ddr LE.
Sorry about that just had to let it out, in the meantime i'll put the inwin to use and throw the celeron in there, if dad ever dishes out the cash for a hub and some nic's i'll network them and run folding on it 24/7.
I'll check in tomorrow night and see if you get that 700, hopefully you get it up and running before i leave :) Isnt it about time you started thinking watercooling Slake? i know Mr.B has mentioned it a time or two but i havent heard a peep from you. Be sure to fill me in on your CPU status when i return in July sometime.

I definately relate to buying a piece here and there as cashflow allows. I bought my Celeron in Nov 2000 , but didn't get my mobo til April 2001. I was green enough to think the Celly would work on my OEM slot1 P2B.Those are some real sweet specs your'e working on. I'd go with the Enermax 430 if at all possible. I'll probably hold off on watercooling until I start my AMD system. That may be a year away.
I'll go by the office tomorrow but I doubt I'll be lucky enough to run into the UPS guy. I'll post an update tomorrow regardless. We are gonna miss you while you are away.

Thanks Slake i'll have a good time, yeah the 430 is 30$ more but i suppose it's cheaper than having to buy a 2nd PS later on. I hear ya on the ordering 1 piece at a time, might have to go with 128mb pc2100 and an older vid card and possibly a duron just to get things moving. All in good time. Well hope you find that UPS guy, I understand about the watercooling, i couldnt see watercooling my intel, nothing a good HS wouldnt be able to do really. I hopefully will get paid for the work i do while on "Vacation" (not really as i have to work there the whole time). Soom though i hope, i'd like to get this system build ASAP, ohh and OS? Mandrake, hope i can figure out how to work it. its gonna be alright ive got a linux guru a few miles away. Well its 2 in the morn here so i'd best wrap up this chapter in the life of OF, sorry my posts are so long i tend to ramble. Eventually the 700 will turn up, things always have a way or working out.
No luck today, Junk mail and bills only, yeccch! I'm sure Mandrake won't be a problem for you OF. If you do have any prblems with it, Mr B and the other trailblazers are there for you. When are you leaving for "vacation"?

Monday night. Going on 2 weeks now isnt it that youve been waiting for your 700? HOPEFULLY you get it by the time i come back :). I heard mandrake is a tad tricky getting certain things to play nice with each other, but time will tell on that one.

If I can get my Linux issues sorted out, I'd be happy to help you get yours running, OF.
Haven't tried it in a couple of days....might play with the Linux tomorrow (Sunday).....

Thanks Mr.B, when i get back im gonna fool around with all the celeron gear ive got and probably use that as my testbed for Linux, dont know if Mandrake 8 was the right choice but it seems pretty popular. I'll check back tomorrow and hopefully Slakes got his 700 in, if not i'll have to wait 3 weeks before i know for sure.
Thanks for the interest OF. I'll post as soon as the Postman/woman and UPS guy/Gal comes tomorrow. I went by the office yesterday but no luck. The UPS tracking site suddenly shows no info on my tracking# for the SK6. I'm not sure what that means. I'm not worried though. I think I should have both by Tuesday. The echeduled delivery date for the SK6 was 6-26-01.
Yipeeeeeeee!!! I got the chip! The UPS guy just left. It's a P3 700 cB0 stepping- 100MHz FSB-1.65V
the #'s are 3035A299-0023 SL3XX.
Would that be week 35?
Now I just need my SK6 copper heatsink. It's being delivered at my house. I should be so lucky that it comes today too. I'll install the chip regardless of the SK6 tonight. While waiting I made a fan adaptor for my old heatsink. If that ain't food enuf I got a 50mm 7500 rpm fan to put on it.
Thanks for the support while waiting guys! I'll update tonight.
U go!!!! God intntions deserve support and u have it from me overclock the hell out of it im stuck at 1008 hope u ca do better with those i wish i had an ssus but my soyo is holding up ok
I just hope I can get as good an overclock as you have EuroDj. Thanks for the encouragement. I'm still at work. Leaving in 15 minutes. Chompin' at the bit! I am gonna try and wait until after dinner tonight and get the kids in bed before I install. Just checked UPS tracking on my ThermalRight SK6, and looks like it will arrive tomorrow. I ain't waiting for it though. Gonna go with my old hsf tonight and install the SK6 tomorrow. The average for the Costa Rica SL3XX in the CPU database is 969MHz. The highest I saw was 1050,(that was probably water-cooled) so if I get as good a oc as you got EuroDj I'll be real happy!
It's ALIVE!! Slapped on the Arctic Silver 2, Installed my old heatsink with the 80MM home-made adapter and fired her up. I left the FSB setting at 108 (where it was running my Celeron 600 R.I.P). Idle temp taken after 10 minutws of startup is 33C. I haven't put a load on it yet. Mobo temp is 25C ambient is 25C and system temp reported by a probe 1 inch above the cpu fan is 26.
