Finally finished getting together my new setup. 2 months and $600 later I've put together a decent setup. Today I got my Thermalright SP-97 in and was blown away by what it did for me.
When I ordered my motherboard (A7N8X-X) and proc combo it came with some low profile crappy Thermaltake fan. With some Arctic Silver 5 I was running at 42c idle and 50c loaded with no overclocking. I put on my SP-97 and a 90mm fan and overclocked to 200x12.5, a love giving 2.5ghz.
I let it Idle for an hour and it staye at a cool 37c. Then I ran Toast for 2 hours and it topped out at 47c. I did have to up the voltage to 1.85v to keep it stable but it's running very well. Too bad I can't get any higher on the voltage without some solder hacks, or I'd try and get it up there a bit more.
The best part is when a buddy at work said "So you spent $110 on your processor and $60 on the heatsink/fan? Why didn't you just take that $170 and buy a better proc?" I said "Show me an AMD proc that'll give me 2.5Ghz and I'll get back to you.."
I'm running a single stick of 512meg pc3200 Samsung ram at the moment. Any tips on maybe squeezing anything else out of this proc without getting a new motherboard? Seems to me with a 47c high load at 2.5ghz I would still have some breathing room.
