how do I disable SATA so it wont go looking for it during bootup?
is it BIOS or a jumper?

Its on the first page of the bios.
Under hard drives.

hm ... my bios (1015) "says" that only SATA is enabled but the IDE-drives work ... and when i use the PATA-setting the IDE-drives won't but SATA will ?!? i don't know whats wrong -.-

According to the manual (pg 4-13 in my case) the default setting "S-ATA allows you to use native OS on Serial ATA and Parallel ATA ports....." it has nothing to do with actual automatic detection of SATA drives.
