I have a 2.4B right now and an IT7max2v2 board.

I don't have much cash to spend so I'm thinking of just getting a P4 3.06Ghz (still available at some shops).

If I do get that CPU, must I reinstall OS to get hyperthreading? Or is it like plug and play?

Thanks for the replies.

Using Windows XP?

First of all, you have to enable HT Technology in the BIOS.

After installing the CPU and booting into Win XP, Windows will detect new hardware - your processor (2 of them); after the system restarts you should have Win XP showing 2 x P4 3.06 GHz processors in device mamanger, or press ctrl+alt+del, and under performance you'll see 2 CPU usage graphs.

I once installed Windows xp without HT on and i had to reinstall windows with HT ON to allow me to use it

I needed to manually go into device manager and change the computer from a uniproccesser machine to a multiproccesser machine to get it to detect the "2nd" chip.

In my expericance though, if you want to play games, disable HT. All of my FPSs went down, and my 3dmark went from 21K to 18K.

It was able to run prime95 in the background and not effect the scores, but it was pretty pointless considering usually you dont run prime at the same time as you run a game.

Since I run SETI I absolutely love HyperThreading. I would encourage you to turn it on until you decide whether you like it or not.

When I upgraded from my 2.53 GHz to the 3.06 GHz I did not need to do anything to Windows as it autodetected "MultiProcessor" and made the necessary changes. Some guys seem to have more trouble.

That 3.06 GHz should do 3.4 GHz (148 FSB) easy. I'm very happy with mine.

Yeah it's a nice chip. Been enjoying mine for some time now. I have to say that the HT is a plus for me. After not using HT for a good while under Win200 and comparing it to having it enabled under WinXP, it seems like some things just go a little smoother. Mostly when using multiple programs and switching between them.
