im running a PIII 866 on a Soyo 7vba133 Mobo with 384 mb ram pc133 cas2
im running at 24 C idle with a/c on 29-30 without if u want pics email me, anyhows
ive been thinking of pushing it to 1040mhz yet i dont know if its worth the trouble shes working so flawlessly at this speed i dont want to mess it up will the difference be significant or should i leave it as is and be happy with what ive accomplished...voltage is at
1.9v!!!
Raid 0 30GB 7200 rpm Maxtor
20gb 7200 Rpm seagate
Ati 64Mb ddr VIVO

Well it can't hurt to try, just don't go over 2v. If it doesn't work them just come back down.
It isn't worth any trouble for unless you like trouble which many overclockers do, it's only a 3% gain which will probabally result in about 3% performance due to it being a system side overclock which is just not noticable but you could always look at is as a 37% overclock from spec speed.
I say go for it but don't be disheartened if it doesn't work just come back down again.

What most of us do is run it up as high as it will go while stable as long as your temps are fine then when its unstable figure out if we can change a few things in bios or do cooling mods to get stability back if thats a no go then turn it down until it is stable and you will still have a good running stable PC maybe even a little faster.

I wouldn't expect big gains from it, remember it's little over a 3% increase. the pci bus at 40mhz can be dangerous for the hardrive and nics and soundcards. If the soundcard has problems it usually displays them in distorted sound so play some mp3's preferably multiple if you can, and see it has any problems. The nic can be damaged eventually so if you have one check if it's getting hot and if it is consider cooling the hot chips. Hardrives can be very picky about bus speeds, especially maxtors. It's hard to test it without screwing it up so back up you stuff and run the sandra burin in wizard with the harddrive checked and see if there are any problems. Another potential problem I forgot to mention is internal modems if you have one of these, these can be damaged just like the nic and can get quite warm adding to your overall case temp. It's hard to cool some of it's components so consider an external one if you have an internal one. Other than that I suggest trying the prime95 torture test, this will tell you if your cpu or memory is being pushed too far and is the best stability test there is I'll send it you if you want.

where do i get that prime95 torture test? 40mhz too much everyone else has gone even higher than me i wonder how they did it? if all goes well with that torture test do i leave it at 1040 or do i lower it anyways i dont plan on going any higher everything seems in order, ill do that mp3 test to verify i have a sb live Xgamer 5.1 and a 3com nic oh and my rad card thats all the pci stuff i have!! so what do i do

40mhz is not alot you get most of your boost from the increased memory speed.

Prime 95.
When you start it hit the cancel box then pick options and pick self test or torture.
Nice overclock. 160fsb is very good.
You should just run it at that for couple days and see if it stays stable before trying for anymore.

I didn't say it was too much only it could be. you can download prime95 from here (ftp://mersenne.org/gimps/prime95.zip) simpley unzip it, run prime95.exe, then cancel the registration screen and goto options then torture test and let it run.
