First of all, That switch user feature is not all that great, just log off. And second turn messenger service off(not msn messenger) and that will get rid of your popups

Here is a free virus scanner that scans your system online, so that you don't have to install anything. It doesn't work on all systems though (you need IE and a bit of luck, from my experience).

If you want some suggestions on a virus scanner or a spyware scanner, just ask around. Here are my recommendations...

Avast Antivirus (freeware in Home environments)

Adaware, freeware for home use

Also, if you are getting windows messenger spam, it is because you have no firewall between you and the internet.

ZoneAlarm is a suite of firewalls, one version is free

Also, Windows XP has a built-in firewall (that will be much stronger when service pack 2 comes out). If you want to use that, you can ask how you can activate it (if you don't know how to).

Hope this post helps.

i downloaded avast and it got rid of a bunch of trojans and other trash. thanks alot. i still can't switch user though

you can get SP2 Beta right now... I am running it and it makes a slight improvement on performance. I am getting about 3 to 4 hundred more 2k1 marks with SP2

EDIT here is a Link to the Beta SP2 Installer

I don't know what to suggest, however you can do an EMERGENCY procedure, if you really want the user switching functionality...

You can reinstall windows, as in not do a reformat but sticking in the disk and telling Windows to install again (not in a new partition, DO NOT REFORMAT, alike alike). It will just reinstall windows, leave all programs alone, and give you a fresh start that you might need.

I know you can do it, I have done it, but it has been a while since I have done it so I don't have a tried and true walkthrough to tell you, as in how to do it. Don't do this reinstall unless you have no other options, and do make a backup (if things go from bad to worse).
