Hi,

I finally got around to installing some thermister and tracking my temperature. To recap, my cB0 P3 can do 1GHz but only at 2.0V. I tried this earlier last week but without any thermister and I didn't want to risk burning up something so I backed off for the while.

Here's my config:

Antec SX1030B case with 4 80mm fans (2 in, 2 out)
Asus P2B rev 1.10
Asus sloket
Alpha PEP66 with 60mm YSTech fan sucking up
P3 750 stepping cB0
FSB 124MHz (for 930MHz)
vcore 1.70V
Voodoo3 3000 PCI

I only had time this morning to use BurnInTest. The room's ambient temperature was 23.5 deg C. The P2B's onboard reading was stable at 25 deg. I added a thermister to the green part of the processor close to the die and this gave a reading of 31 deg C at peak load. I also had a thermister on the PEP66 and that was 25 deg C also.

I also did some readings of the V3 and that was around 42 deg C.

I'm going to revisit 1GHz but with vcore of 2.0v. What temperature should I get concern about?

George

Well as far as damaging your cpu over 45c.
As far as temps preventing you from overclocking higher its hard to say as every cpu is different but in general the low 30s.

45C pretty hot, but I occassionalyl venture to 48-49C with no loss of stability, but 50C seems to be magical for instability in most machines.

I agree with Placid, 45C with that chip would be about it without random GPFs and BSODs.

Come to think of it, the voltage set that high will almost gurantee you will surpass 45C under full load unless you're using liquid nitorgen or live in Siberia.

2.0 V seems high. I would not run mine that high ever.....

mine shows 1.66 as default.

I'v got a PIII 733 with a DD water cooling system on it and start to expierence instability right arround 38C while gaming in Quake 3 Arena. Maybe try to blow lots of air arround the case to keep hot pockets form forming inside. That's my main problem right now with cooling. Still havn't found where to point all the fans.
I agree with everyone else here though, 45C would make me nervous. 50C and I'd be shuting her down fast. Have you experemented with different additives to your watercooling liquid ? They may give you the extra cooling you need.

According to Intel, a PIII can take 70 degrees Celcius!!!! That's hot. Is 45 degrees C really that hot? Come on, its only 105 degrees. That's only 7 degrees over human body temperature. About the same as a decently warm shower. Really hot coffee is about 120.

So what makes 45C so hot?

45C is not that hot if that is full load. I dont know why everyone is freaking out about it. 50C also doesnt mean you have to shut your computer down like one of you said. You would probably want to shut down your computer if it gets above 60. But 45 is not that bad.

On hot days I can get up to 47C and no stability problems at all! I can sometimes get up to 55C and even 60C and still no stability problems. I got to those high temps when I didnt have a good HSF so stop reaking out about 45c.

And if your expierencing stability problems at 38C zoopa, you need to take a look at your system. You shouldnt have that at 38C, thats, what, about 100 degrees.

My PC usually shuts itself down at 50C by locking up (and forcing me to push the reset button) :)

Wow, that is crap then because mine can stay stable in very high temeratures...so...HAHA!

that's why I ordered a new RAM chip, actually the same exact one you're using (Corsair 256MB 133 cas2), to help stabilize this system... it just doesn't like heat and may be the generic RAM failing.
