ok say my processor accidently fries ;) i have p3 550 katmai, if i return it to them, will they send me the same processor (p3 550 katmai) or will they send me a p3 550 coppermine? or will thye just laugh in my face?

They will give you the same cpu if they have one.
If not whatever the closest match is they have.

ok since katmais arent made anymore (i assume) they will send me a coppermine?

Probably you will have to see what they offer :)

would i have to email them with my request? or say that i know my PIII is a katmai and i want a coppermine? or does it accidently fall off the top of the house?

You will have to e-mail or call to get a rma number then they will send you thier closest match always a higher mhz cpu if they dont have yours.
Asking for a trade-up is not a good idea as they may think you are just looking for something for nothing.

and i presume you have a suggestion on what to say? of should i just come out and blatently say that i want a coppermine instead of a katmai? i guess im kind of confused

Just say your cpu is bad and you want to exchange it per the 3 year warranty and then they will ask you questions and if they feel you have not abused the cpu and voided the warranty they will give you a rma number at that time you can ask if you will be getting the same cpu in exchange and they will tell you.

Oem cpus are not warrantied by intel but thru the oem or place you bought it.
Intel will do nothing for you.

Placid and Puppet have given good advice.
If. Your CPU dies during the warranty period AND you have not abused (overclocked, beat with a hammer etc..) then you are entitled to a replacement of a "like" chip. When you overclock your system you give up any warranty rights. A little fudging may be tolerated, but a blatant lie or attempt to defraud the manufacturer or distributor will not be. You should not be fishing for advice in the forums on how to perform an illegal act. Such behaviour jeopardizes the good name and the very existence of this site. The proper way to upgrade is like Puppet said, sell yours and buy another one. Check out the classifieds link on the home page for some great deals.
Thanks and good luck!

Another country now heard from..... ???

Endeavor, Slake brings up a very valid point. To do what you are asking about is to blatantly try to rip off intel. While you might not (ok, never) receive back in sale what you originally spent on a processor, this is the right and honest way to go about things. Chalk up the difference in money in the same manner you would when selling a used car. You wouldn't take back a perfectly running car to GM or Ford, and ask for a new one, because the model you now own isn't fast enough. If something like this were the case, every kid who ever bought a Camaro or Mustang would be back at the dealer like clockwork in 35 month intervals.

Now, a note from an entirely different position. Being the new Moderator in the Classifieds, I welcome you to list your processor in there. HOWEVER, list it in the "Motherboards - CPU's" catagory only, and ONCE. Multiple posts in different catagories WILL be deleted.

Since I've been a member of these forums, I look thru the listings in our Classifieds fairly often, looking for a bargain on components I need. I've seen many, many listings edited by the person placing the ad with the word ---SOLD---.

People do actually use the Classifieds here. List it for a fair price, and put the $$ you get towards a new processor. There's a lot of people still running PPGA Celerons, P II's, etc , and a P/// Katmai would be a nice upgrade for them. You may have outgrown it, but there are those who'd enjoy the speed and higher bandwidth it provides.

The more people screw intel, the more intel is forced to screw the people, in the form of high prices. Help us all out, and please do the right thing.

Thanks!

Hey are you now a mod too? I gotta visit general section more!

I have a retail p3-600E and if I crush it taking off the heatsink will they give me another one? it is only 13months old and is running fine at 800.

If it was a stock or Intel approved heatsink, I'd say you would have a 50/50 chance if you got a good Intel rep on the phone. Since you overclocked it you would be in violation of the warranty, BUT the overclock had nothing to do with the crushed core. So I think you should be compensated by Intel or the Heatsink manufacturer as long as you followed installation instructions (if any). I just recieved my all copper ThermalRight SK6 today and it didn't come with instructions. I guess they figure anyone ordering a high performance heatsink should know how to do it safely. Man this thing is heavy! I just hope I dont break anything installing it.
Yeah, our Mr B is a moderator now. He'll be great at it. Daniel is to be commended in his choices of Tim, Shadow , and Mr B as moderators.
