i mean im not dissin it i love the idea of pushing technology to its limit and a little bit beyond and without O/Cing we would be stuck playing quake 3 with 14 mhz vid cards and 25 mhz 486s
but i assume you all spend a lot of $$$ on OCing, what if u were to add up all the money u spent, would u have enough for a new proccessor? maybe one thats base speed is faster than what u want to achive?
just a thought
If I were to add up all of the money I spent, (everything, mind you) I'd have more than enough to get two or three of the latest and greatest. However, IF I took that money, and did this, I'd only have a bare cpu(s), with nothing to mount it on, or in.
I've put the nucleus of my rig together on a shoestring budget.. Most of the peripherials cost me more than the main components;
Generic AXT midtower case, 250W PSU, new, local, $38
Asus P3C2000 motherboard, used, e-BAY, $75, plus shipping
P/// 600E Slot 1 (CuMine), used, e-BAY, $75, + ship
Alpha P3125 hsf, used, e-BAY, $21 + ship
2 sticks 128 MB (each, 256 total) PC133, used, 1 local, 1 e-BAY, $120 for both (I got these LONG before the prices bottomed out...=( )
NIC, ancient AMD PCI 10/100, pull from old system, $0
Iomega 48x CD-ROM, new, CompUSA, $30 after rebate
Yamaha 4416sx CDRW, w/ ISA SCSI card, used, e-BAY, $65 + ship
Floppy, 3.5, pull from old system, $0
Joystick, Raider Pro, new, CompUSA, $10
Components used, and later upgraded;
4 MB PCI video card, pull from old system, $0
V2 1000 PCI, new, Staples, $50 after rebate
10 GB hdd, Quantum, ATA66, 5400 rpm, used, e-BAY, $58 + ship
ESS 1869 ISA sound card, new, Staples, $29
Monitor, 14" SVGA, up to 1024x768 res, used, "road shopping" (pulled from someone's trash on side of road), $0
Speakers, my old guitar amp for the LONGEST time, (lol) $0
HP DeskJet 500, used, local, $25
Mouse/keyboard, from my old system, $0
What they were upgraded to (here's where the BIG $$ comes in);
HP DeskJet 932c, new, Staples, $199
3D Prophet II MX (GF2) AGP 32MB, new, Staples, $129
Maxtor 30 GB ATA100 7200rpm hdd, new, BestBuy, $100 after rebate
17" Envision Monitor, new, CompUSA, $100 after rebate
SB Live! value sound card, new, local, $50
400W PSU, new, CompUSA, $80
Labtec Spin 50 speakers, new, Staples, $20
Fans, fans, fans.........here, there, and everywhere....$50-60
Then throw in.....;
Scanner, new, $60 after rebate
Logitec WebCam USB, new, e-BAY, $30 + ship
Wingman gamepad, new, Staples, $0 after rebate
4 port USB hub, new, e-BAY, $18 + ship
MadCatz steering wheel, used, e-BAY, $11 + ship
Jeez....did I miss anything??
Hmm... I'm way over budget!! lol BUT....with all of the pulls, spares, more stuff found "road shopping", etc... I've almost got enough to put together a couple more rigs. Plus, I'm not enslaved to MSN for eternity.
And that is PRICELESS... ???
Oh, yeah...why do we overclock??..... Because we can!! I had a ton of fun building this rig, and learned a ton along the way. I'd do it again (and I will, hehehehe) in a New York heartbeat.......

ohh, now if only we can convince intel to let us have MORE fun!

STOP BUYING INTEL!
humm.. sorry.. too much cafein...
by the way.. now we have dual AMD !
I love blasphemy. I do not overclock for the fun, that's just icing on the cake, but to save money. My current rig saved me hundreds over a dual P3 system and outperforms the equivalent P3 upgrade (cpu and mobo would cost me plenty more than I paid).

Why do car enthusiasts add performance parts? Why do motorcycle entusiasts add chrome?
You give me one hobby that the participants NOT tweak?

Coin and stamp collecting.
You actually destroy the value of these collectables by doing anything to them (like cleaning old coins...totally negates any collectable value).

I overclock basically because it's fun and I save a lot of money.
You say that you spend a bunch of money on cooling etc. My Volcano heatsink cost 10 bucks and gets my celeron and extra 250mhz.
Maybe the Supercoolin people spend alot of money, but not me :)
Think of the feeling you got when you you first successfully overclocked your CPU. The POST beep goes through and the OS loads.... noticably faster... and bang... your in windows... with no crashes....
First things first... lets run some benchmarks. You see your scores race ahead of your non-OC'ed scores. The amazing 3D shooter game that once was a little choppy in that cool scene, now plays smooth as silk. You are blown away at the rendering speed of you 3D MAX (and doubly impressed it still runs.)
That is why I see overclocking as a viable alternative to paying $$$$$ for new tech.

To beat technology at its own game (or the manufaturer)

does anyone of you guys really sees the difference between 1 Ghz and 1.1Ghz???

In number crunch, encoding, etc you will see the difference over time.. a few seconds here or there add up in the long run, but in immediate/everyday use I can't say I see much difference between 600mhz and 1 ghz. I only see the benefits in gaming usually.

I see the difference when I see myself in the mirror in the morning, smiling, knowing that when I am turning on the comp I am getting the most out of my hard-earned money.
And hey...if not what would I do with all my money and time ? ;o)

Yeah but my PC has never gotten me laid. My bike got me lots of tail. Ever done it on the hood of a car....oh yeah. Gotta go get the wife now...

I agree here. It's the I can do this so I do. Plus you learn more about what the hardware can do and take.
Actually it's almost an illness. I spend most of my time thinking how to speed up or cool down my machine. Gives me some sanity in my insane world. My place to go and get away. Once I realized you could OC I was hooked.
Enough rambling......
Fun,fun,and more fun. For the love of a challenge. Of course getting the same performance for 1/3 the price is very satisfying.

Well I did not spend any extra money to overclock OK so maybe 13 dollars 10 dollars for 2 HSF's that i cut down for my northbridge and video card and then the 3 dollars for some radio shack compound, so i think i did pretty well for 13 bucks, i wanted a nice system so i bought good stuff to start then found out about overclocking and since most of it is free why not overclock? my CPU now benchmarks better then some p4's.
