Intel said at the time that one of the ideas behind these processors was to be able to use commercially available chips for the L2.
So can you change the L2 to something bigger and faster? (If my L2 cache is the barrier for beyond 600 on my 450 katmai - then would something that is meant to be 300 or faster remove that barrier? )

Why bother? A P3 650 with full speed cache is 87 bucks on Pricewatch.
It'll run circles around your Katmai at the same speed, and probably clock to 800mhz or more.

But if you can find a stick if L2 laying around for a couple of bucks you might not need to...
There's gotta be a PC scrap pile out there somewhere willing to let you dip your hand!

No point, changing this processor, as I also have a baby TBird ( 850 - though I paid for a duron, but that's another story). I have the luxury of pushing this machine to it's limits now, and I'll try anything that I can assuming that it's dirt cheap or free. I just want to know if anyone has done it, or if it even can be done.
And Pinky, thanks to all your responses in my different posts...

600 is pretty much the upper limit for the katmai, my katmai 550 and only pull 612 when others have pulled around 800 with STOCK EQUIPMENT, the katmai is just too old :)
I've seen it done. But the solding required is bloody hard!! Go into the bios and TURN OFF The L2 cache. If you can overclock higher - then this might be a good option. But as said, it's not REALLY exconomiacally viable.

WOW! Spode posted on one of my topics! Thank You!
Now I that I know that it is possible, I have more research to do.
Hey Nathan, is that your real name - or a spin off from the musical "Guys & Dolls" ?
