My friend has a gateway computer that came with a 40gb harddrive, he put in a second harddrive that is 120gb both are WD. He then used the WD tools to copy the 40gb hd onto the 120bg and now if he takes out the 40gb the computer will not boot. It wont even go into the bios. You have to have the second hd on it to work. He uses windows XP home too. I thought it was a windows problem but now im not sure. Later today im going over to try and fix it and id like to know if it can be before i spend my time driving 30 miles.

did he make sure the 120 gig one was configured as "master" before he tried to start it? if not, tell him to check his instructions to change the jumpers on the hd to "master" or "single"

are you using the plug at the end of the cable i have heard that some mb have a problem if you dont use it when it is the only hard drive . make sure it has no jumpers on it if it is a single hard drive . if it is set to master on a wd it won't work .
wd hard drive defalt for a single hard drive is no jumper on any pins . if it has jumer on the master with out a slave drive it will not work the mb will continue to look for a slave drive that is not there.
You didn't by chance put the CDROM and the HD on the same cable did you?
