This is runing on my server... 24h on... a normal cooler should be ok.. since its in "standby" most of the time... with the fan running and the processor just sitting around...

i'm having trouble to identify this Chip... since i've heard some p133MMX from that time has the multiplier enabled.. and some made later don't, i'd like to know the build date... I've found a lot of sites.. but none of 'em have the scheme of this particular cpu...

I'm posting some jpgs I've made of it...

Basicaly, the info on it reads
Front:
intel (of course ;) )
pentium
w/ MMX tech
A80503166 SL27K
88090058 - 1413
INTEL (m)(c) '92 '95 <-- this last line is the odd part.. none of the sites i found had THAT on the chips... here should be a line with some serial and some code to see the build date... weird

on the back its have:
e748247b8G
PHILIPPINES
AB0503166
SL27K/2.8V
IPP <-- thats written without color (black over black) only an almost flat watermark

ok, thats it... its basically all that I know from this chip :)
the Mboard its on is a good intel original... but that have been badly treated... have some COMs burned.. i never seen the lpt working.. if i use SIMM memory it just dont power up... the fan is attached to the cooler with sewing string.... that kind of futile stuff... but the rest is ok ;-) ...i guess.
(i never had a crash from that system... the up time right now is 2months 3days 1hour)

Are you sure that's not a 166MHz chip?? I think you'll find that it is.

errr... true.... its a 166Mhz... i wrote it wrong in the topic...

maybe cuz i was still with a P133 in my head... but i found out that the SY22 series havent multiplier enabled... and since the RAM cant take more FSB... its still a 133 :/

but this one ia a P166MMX for sure... sorry for the mess...

anyluckier with the date then I was?

I didn't know that there where MMXs built in ceramic pin grid array. As far as I know they were built "celeron-like", with the core visible in the middle of the die (I don't know if the MMX is called PPGA too).

That's what I can get from the pictures you've sent.
It doesn't look like a MMX to me, but rather a classic P5 (maybe remarked).

Is it really working at 2.8V (as in picture) ?

I had a 133 MMX and a 200 MMX. They made em for sure.

about that chip not being a MMX... thats weird... the extension is there (if i probe it under linux it's there - i dont know any good windows program to do that) but if i run it under window and try to use some game that only runs if you have MMX, well, they identify the Chip as a MMX, but they all hang...

maybe they remarked more than just the case

i will post the procinfo of that chip later... i dont have any box to attach it right now

ah, and it boot with "PentiumMMX" on the bios

Some good info about the pentium classic CPUs in the below link.

That chip is definetely a P-166MMX 2.7-2.9Vcore

here's the procinfo of that CPU

processor : 0
vendor_id : GenuineIntel
cpu family : 5
model : 4
model name : Pentium MMX
stepping : 3
cpu MHz : 167.046
fdiv_bug : no
hlt_bug : no
f00f_bug : yes
coma_bug : no
fpu : yes
fpu_exception : yes
cpuid level : 1
wp : yes
flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr mce cx8 mmx
bogomips : 333.41

you see? when the CPU is probed for its flags it does returns MMX! but any mmx instruction passed to it fails... is it possible to a cpu to be remarked like that???? ..i doubt... probably "jammed"? but again, i cant find much specs of it anywhere

i'm reading batboy's link right now...
